Tax Agency to Crack Down on Bribery

The National Tax Service (NTS) will launch a task force to crack down on corruption among ranking NTS officials and those in charge of tax investigation in a move to prevent fraudulent activity.

The decision came Monday at a meeting of heads of regional tax offices attended by more than 250 ranking tax officials nationwide.

The national tax agency said Monday that it decided to set up a special team in charge of collecting information regarding ranking officials' improper activities, including bribery, at a meeting presided over by acting commissioner Hur Byung-ik.

The agency plans to take heavy disciplinary action against those receiving bribes. Any tax official involved in bribery will be excluded from working in inspection-related teams in the future.

The taskforce also plans to take stern action against those bribing tax officials by filing complaints against them.

For companies seeking to maintain current payrolls and create jobs, the NTS decided to minimize tax inspection so that they can focus on their businesses. It also decided to study ways to provide companies with tax refunds earlier than planned in a move to reduce their financial burdens.

In order to improve transparency, it will expand private sector's say in the agency's company selection committee. It also plans to make further efforts to develop its reporting system to ensure a more transparent inspection process.

In the meantime, the NTS said that starting Thursday, it plans to individually inform around 760,000 people eligible for the earned income tax credit (EITC) when and how they can apply for the tax incentive system.

Through the system, to be introduced here for the first time this year, the government will subsidize low-income working families with up to 1.2 million won a year.

When I read the title of this thread I thought it said "Taxi Agency to Crack Down on Bribery"

I was wondering who would bribe a taxi driver, and if that's even possible...

will never happen. even roo hoo hyun is going down for bribes and fraudulent loans, same as every korean president before him. what makes anyone think these tax officers will be whiter than white? the 'task force' itself will be found to be corrupt.

I just did that today! Laughing

Told the driver that there was an extra 10,000 won for him if I got to my destination by a certain time. Sure enough, he got me there on time.

If a cabbie gets me somewhere faster than I expect, I would likely give him a tip. It encourages Korean cab drivers to want to have more foreign customers, I think.

Anyway, regarding taxes, my first hagwon boss didn't even pay taxes.
It appears from this article that the government won't fire people who are involved in corruption. They would just not be allowed to engage in expectations. In other countries, the officials would be put in jail.
If they make any progress, more power to them, because corruption is so rampant in the government.
