Quote:
STRASBOURG, France -- President [B.] Obama on Friday called on Europe and the United States to drop negative attitudes toward each other...

"...in Europe, there is an anti-Americanism that is at once casual but can also be insidious. Instead of recognizing the good that America so often does in the world, there have been times where Europeans choose to blame America for much of what's bad...

"So let me say this as clearly as I can: America is changing. But it cannot be America alone that changes."

CNN Reports

The man's stock just keeps going up in my estimation. Those of us who questioned his association with Rev. J. Wright could not have been more wrong about him and his worldviews. I did not expect him to speak to Western Europeans like this.

He must have said that on his second trip abroad.

"abraod" beyond the boundaries of one's country.

He did visit Canada, which is beyond the border of his country.

Anyway, a good point on his part.

Yes, it was his second trip. The first was to the exotic land of ...Can..a..da (as John Stewert put it).

It was funny. He was in Ottawa but accidentaly said..."It is a pleasure being here, in Iow...Ottawa."..........

It was great.

His trip to France and his speech was productive. He played good cop/bad cop very well. Although, he massage the ego of the French a little too much. But, it was nice to see Europe scolded a little but then given an aspirin to ease the sting.

Yes, I rather enjoyed that, too. Especially the 'Iow' part. Clearly a Freudian slip about where he'd rather be.

Just habit, more likely.

This is how Obama started that speech, btw:

Quote:

In America, there's a failure to appreciate Europe's leading role in the world. Instead of celebrating your dynamic union and seeking to partner with you to meet common challenges, there have been times where America has shown arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive . . .

Maybe what Gopher was referring to was his first trip outside of the Laughing North American Union.

Man, I wish Canada and the U.S. would unite. Canada's my second favorite country in the world.

Two simple things, Kuros: B. Obama was throwing Western Europeans a bone before criticizing them -- which represented his main thrust; and he was (rightly) distancing himself from the W. Bush administration's attitude toward Western Europe.

Let's not dis the Great and Sovereign state that made Obama a viable candidate, please. One could begin to think you've read too many of Nowhere Man's posts. (I'm kind of busy this weekend being proud of Iowa for it's gay marriage decision last Friday, too.)

Then he should have said so, but he used the word "abroad". He could have simply said "to Europe" but he didn't.

I doubt very much that Obama made a mistake when he almost said Iowa instead of Ottawa. Most likely he was trying to get some laughs after being briefed about Canadians having a sense of humour.

As to Obama's second trip abroad, he can say what he wants but America has to remember that Europe can be your friend, but to become a good friend it is the U.S. that has to have a change in attitude and policy. Most of the world wants a good relationship with the U.S. and they do try, but many are afraid that their old friend might just go back to its old ways in a matter of time. Personally, I don't think much actual change will happen under Obama's term as its not so much to do wih him, but rather systematic policies of the working government, and an attitude held by many of the American public that simply says "F'em all" that causes most of the problems. Bush didn't have much of a problem with Europe, it was his staff that put their foots in their mouths.
