I was wondering if anyone had brought their dog over to Korea from the states. My dog lives on the east coast of the states right now, and I'm considering bringing her over here the next time I go and come back, which is next month. Did the flight emotionally scar your dog? Did he/she seem different at all after you brought her over on such a long flight (14+ hours from my hometown)?

This was discussed here recently: http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=148591&highlight=

The size, age, health, energy level and sociability of your dog are key factors in how difficult her transition will be. A healthy dog will most likely be able to cope with the stress of the flight (although some do die), but having a dog in Korea might be more difficult, for both of you, than you anticipate.

Can we call a moratorium on the dog-as-snacks jokes? Seriously? It's not so much that they offend me as a dog lover, but as a joke lover.

I ate at a dog restaurant. The meat made my skin warm and have me a raging erection. It's true what they say, it gives you stamina.

Dogs are annoying, savage, violent creatures anyway. They should be eaten. Cats are the real pets.

If you are here for a longer term then it is nice to have them with you. I have never had a problem with my dogs on longer flights. However, one thing I do is limit it to 10 or 11. I fly to the west coast (LA) then rent a car one way and drive quite a distance just so my dog that flys cargo doesn't have to be in there any longer than necessary. It is more expensive and less convenient than flying the whole way, but I feel it is worth it for his sake. If coming from the East coast I suppose a person could break it up into two shorter flights with a break of a few days in between also. Anyways, just an idea for you.

If you decide to bring your dog I would suggest taking as few flights as possible and flying directly from the states to Korea. I found my dog as a stray in Korea and ended up flying her back home with me. I had to take her on 4 different flights, including through Japan, and it was a nightmare. Also, keep in mind that some carriers have temperature restrictions and if the temp is too high or too low at your departure or arrival point, they will not accept your dog and you will be stuck without a flight. The trip was extremely stressful for both of us and my dog was scared because she had no idea what was going on. I didn't give her any sedatives before the trip because I read on the airline website not to, so she was extremely anxious. I was really worried that she wouldn't survive the trip. Maybe I was overreacting, but I was relieved to find her alive and well when I got to Chicago from Tokyo. I'm not saying you shouldn't bring your dog - I know people and have read posts on this site from people who have brought their pets to and from Korea and they have made the trip just fine. Just make sure you do your research, know exactly what the requirements are for each flight or stopping point on your trip, have the paperwork you need, and consult with a good vet to make sure your dog is as safe, comfortable and calm as possible on the trip. I thought I was prepared when I brought my dog home and as it turned out, I wasn't. You will both have a much less stressful trip if you are prepared.

I will take the bait
I have heard studies that say that cat owners are more likely to go crazy. I think your posts prove them.

Dogs are loyal, some have saved lives, have jobs and actually like being pets. Cats are dirty and useless.

I have never understood cat owners. Why do you want something that hates you? Well, maybe they dont hate you but cats do not like to be pets.
I have heard cat owners say to me Do you need to have something that loves you? Yes, I do. I like the fact my wife, my parents, and my dog love me. I think this is natural too.

I think its strange to want a pet that could give two sts about you.

We opted NOT to bring our dog to Korea because we knew we'd be living in an apartment, and there was no telling if we would have a place to take her outside or not. (A park or similar) Now that we are here, I am very glad we didn't bring her, not only for that reason, but also because our apartment is smaller than our house in the States and she needs room to run around. I was sad to leave her, but she is better off where she is. (We gave her to friends of ours who have a huge yard and other dogs for her to play with; she is much happier there!)

We did bring our 2 cats, however. 14 hour plane ride, plus however long it took us to get through check-in and customs on both sides. Contrary to what we thought, they did not hate us for days; instead they were extra cuddly as if to say "please don't ever make us do that again!"

It was also about $260 per cat, so make sure you figure in the cost of bringing your pet; it is more expensive than I thought it would be. Plus the vet costs to get their paperwork for customs.

Honestly, if you're such a pathetic little dweeb that you can't get it up otherwise maybe you should think about tossing yourself off the Hannam bridge and saving us all from your feeble, floppy & inept presence....

You can get your dog some noise canceling headphones, that would help.
Very Happy

If your dog is strong and healthy, I would say try to get the dog familiar with the airport if you live close by. That way he's seen the surroundings before and has some familiarity with the scene before you fly. Maybe even talk to your vet about sedatives. A close friend talked to his vet in the states about his two dogs (shepherds) and was told that the vet would give him sedatives for the 11 hour flight.

Unless you are a true vegan or a vegetarian, don't complain about dogs being eaten. Some studies have shown pigs to be more intelligent than dogs, yet most people don't care about pigs being eaten. Chickens have been shown to be very intelligent too. Dolphins too, do you eat tuna?

Dogs just attack people and are a menace to society. Eat em' all.

Its not the eating of dog meat that upsets me, its the way that the dogs are beaten and torchered before they are killed is what is upsetting and maddening. Pigs, cows, chickens etc are humainly slaughtered before they can be prepared for consumption.

I thought that Koreans tortured other animals too to make them taste better. Don't they also do it to pigs, cows, etc.?

I agree with you on that though, it's not cool. Animals should be slaughter humanely. I used to hear the dogs howling in pain late at night from the dog restaurant near my apartment and it was chilling.

I believe that they only do it to dogs, thats why there was such outrage when they hosted the world cup. As far as i know its actually illegal to farm, slaughter the dogs now, but pretty often a blind eye is thrown. They torcher the dog because they believe that when the dog is in pain it releases adrenaline, which is stored in the meat and then passed on whoever eats it and increases ferility, which i think is pure crap!!

Im not by any means an anti meat eater, i eat meat and enjoy it, but will be selective about it. But i think this is barbaric...
