Hello everyone,

I'm finishing my contract soon, and am trying to plan out how much money I need to live in Korea in between contracts for 2 months. I hate dealing with money, but I thought I should crunch the numbers before I have any problems.

One thing I will have to buy when I move away from my school is a cellphone (because the plan is under my bosses' name and I bet they won't want to pay the bill which usually comes out of my salary).

I don't need anything fancy. I hate using cellphones when I can email, but in Korea it's a necessity to have something to call others and text message them on.

How much could a Card-phone cost me initially and per month?
How much could a phone with a plan cost me initially and the monthly rate?

I might end up keeping this phone if I end up working here for another year, so it might be nice to get one that'll last.

Thanks for any help.

AFAIK, you can only get a contract phone if you have 12 months of validity on your ARC (at least that's what they told me when I went to the shop today). I think card phone may be your only option, but I might be wrong.

Because of the rules regarding ARC cards and such, your best bet may be to rent a phone. The Skype phone rental place at Incheon and Gimpo airports has a website which, if I read it correctly charges 57,000 Won for the first month and 30,000 for the 2nd month plus airtime and sms. I think if you keep your calls on it to a bare minimum and rely heavily on Skype for most calls then you could keep your costs pretty low.

An alternative: get one of your buddies you worked with who has a school-supplied phone to go with you to purchase a prepaid and put it in his name. You pay for it so nothing out of pocket for him to worry about.
