"People are wondering what they can do next. American Solutions has an easy answer: Contact your representatives in Washington and urge them to oppose the big spending, big deficits, big government, big taxes, and big debt Obama Budget. Visit www.americansolutions.com/teaparty to learn more.
Then, we should make July 4, 2009 American Freedom Day. Tea Party activists across America should plan to go out and recruit supporters from every Fourth of July celebration in their community.
If one million freedom-loving Americans work from now to July 4, the size of the Tea Party movement will grow dramatically."

This is up there with the liberals' War on Christmas that we've heard so much about from Bill O --no, it's even worse. Christmas is a foreign holiday. Pilgrims didn't celebrate it and neither did the Puritans.
But Independence Day! What's wrong with calling July 4th Independence Day, like we've done for more than 200 years? Why should we change it to 'American Freedom Day'? What was good enough for my grandfathers should be good enough for Newt and all you other right-whingers out there.
Last week you wanted to change history by nullifying the outcome of the Civil War; this week you want to co-opt the Revolution.
Leave Independence Day alone! America--love it or leave it! |

depends on what you mean by nullifying the result of the civil war. slavery was on the outs. the emancipation proclamation happened before the end of the civil war, FWIW.
however, if you mean 1)greater centralized authority at expense of the states, 2) the ability of the govt to draft folks into involuntary servitude (yep, use slaves to free slaves) or 3) the ability of the central govt to lay ever increasing taxes then yeah...the end of the civil war is as good as any place to mark the end of the republic as the founding fathers intended.
i loved america and left it. |

What I had in mind was clinching the argument that secession was not a topic that is negotiable, but you can have other thoughts. In the meantime, please don't try to change the name of Independence Day. |
