I just saw this, the guy had some good moves to deal with the takewondo kicks, just grabbing the leg and sweeping the other, I think them muay thai guy would have slaughterd him if he could have used the elbows. |

one of my students in high school, a senior is a tae kwon do blackbelt.
his English is extremely limited, almost nonexistent but I like him a lot and I think he likes me.
I was telling him the other day how muay thai is better than taekwondo and the muaythai guy would win and he would howl - NO... No... tae kwon do!
I could only shake my head and say sorry... muay thai is essentially the combo of thai boxing and tae kwon do - and has long been recognized as the most lethal and effective fighting martial art.
the proof is in the pudding - almost every single fighter in UFC and K1 absolutely needs an extensive muy thai background.
those fights are basically muay thai and submission holds once you're on the ground. (though stand up myau thai has been heavily influenced and adapted/changed by more traditional striking/boxing and kickboxing Wetern techniques) |

while some of the most sucessfull MMA strikers do have a muay thai background (to some extent, not as extensive as you might think), I dont really think Muay Thai is the main basis of most MMA figherts stand up game.
The Japanese fighters primarily have their striking background from different Karate branches mixed in with boxing, the American fighters (who specialize in standup) have primarily background from boxing or kickboxing, some, if not quite a lot do have roots in taekwondo and Karate too. While the brazilians, if any have strong foundations in muay thai. Anderson Silva also credited his strong Taekwondo foundation when asked how his standup was so good..
Not saying muay thai is a bad standup sport, probably the best in pure standup vs. standup (without any hybrids), but your comment about MMA was kinda off.
Muay thai vs. taekwondo, muay thai wins easy:)
edit: I think we basically agree, you just call it muay thai influenced by traditional striking, while I would call it traditional striking with leg kicks.. |

marlee we agree.. and MMA has caused a lot of cross influences across all of these "pure" arts.
but I still think the basic MMA fighter, a stand up fighter is a guy who uses muay thai mixed with traditional Western striking/boxing/kickboxing techniques.
You may have watched the Anderson Silva fight a while back when he stepped up in weight class.
the guy tried a muay thai cross kick, he caught it, then punched the guy in the face while holding his leg all in one move and the big lug went down like a rock.
in the post fight interview, Silva (who clearly also has a jiu-jitsu background being Brazilian) said - the guy tried coming at me with muay thai, and that's one of my bases/strengths - so not a good idea. |

The only thing dumb in this thread is your complete lack of punctuation and capitalization and general incomprehensibility.
A logical person would surmise that the other variables would be equal, obviously. |
