Ok, I've now officially ranked this newspaper on the same level as the National Enquirer.

Quote:
Venturing Out in Land of Morning Calm

Dear editor,

As someone who has tutored a lot in Itaewon, Seoul, and worked with a lot of Koreans over my illustrious career, one thing distresses me to no end when I'm working in Korea: Canadian flags.

They're everywhere. They're sewn onto the backpacks of numerous drunken Canadians staggering in and out of nightclubs. They're being waved by loud Canadians in the bars in Itaewon.

They're on the clothing of Canadians selling marijuana. They're all over the place, kind of like Canadian English teachers with fake diplomas.

Why can't Canadians be more subtle? I like to wear my flowered shirts to represent my days on the beach in southern California and my mustache represents my Jewish heritage.

But when I'm in the City that Sparkles, the only flag I like to see is the one that represents the Land of the Morning Calm. I go to Korea to be in Korea, not Canada.

So to the drunk guys in maple leaf shirts the other night who were talking about how Korean women worship Canadian men, I didn't see any women at your table, so get over yourselves. Try showing a little bit of respect to the Korean people who clothe you and feed you.

In short, Canadians in Korea think they're kings, but there really emperors with no clothes. Maybe they could use a fig leaf, or perhaps a little maple leaf.

It's obviously a spoof - but why would they even print it on their site?

Was it on their comedy page? it is kinda funny... (reminds me of the losers who post comments on the SMPA site)

sounds like some Californian who visited Korea - thinking he would be the only foreigner walking the streets - and got pissed off with the amount of Canadians here...

he does make a good point here though -

I think it's cute how the Canadians fetishize their flag. And disturbing. Very disturbing.

Funny, I always thought that about Americans, who pledge their allegiance to it every day and get freaked out if someone burns one.

...but that doesn't stop me from hating other Canadians who insist on advertising their nationality.

The best comment about the maple leaf flag was from Tom Green, yes, that Tom Green, who was trying to convince one of his friends still in Canada to switch sides and move to America....

i forget his exact comment, but Tom points out how people burn leaves America, and proceeds to burn the Canadian flag.

Tom Green.... as American as Superman! (points if you understand that irony, too!)

It wouldn't surprise me that half of the flag-wearers are Americans attempting to disguise their identity. You might as well wear a bulls eye than put a US flag on your backpack.

I've thought of boycotting the Korea Times and just stick to the BBC, CNN, Le Monde Diplomatique. If I were fluent in Korean, perhaps I would read Korean newspapers. Is the Korean Herald any better?

Anyway, I wouldn't expect your average Korean to know who Ron Jeremy is or know he is in x-rated movies. However, I can't believe they printed such an article. It's really horrible. I should print that article when I get a chance and frame it.Smile

Well, for crying out loud, that newspaper needs to get its act together.
We might as well call it the Korea Soju Times.

It's at times like these when you ask: "Dude, where's my newspaper?!"

It's funny how someone pulled a prank on the newspaper, but they deserve considering the trash they print and the fact that they printed something with such outrageous content. It sure is a rag, friends....
