Korea loses to San Diego Padres, a so-so team in the USA at best. After I heard this I figured the best of Korea = a so-so team in the U.S.
But then team USA, from my understanding the countries' best players, lose badly to Puerto Rico, a territory of the U.S.
WTF?! I don't really follow baseball, but can you guys help me figure this one out? People at work are always talking about it and I don't know what to say. |

It's common enough for an all-stars team to lose to a team with weaker players, but better teamwork. |

The Puerto Rico pitcher did a fine job and the US one did not.
There are many good players on both teams.
It was just one game. In baseball a last place team will beat a first place team on occasion, probably more often than you'd see in basketball or some other sports. |

The game vs the Padres was just an exhibition game. Obviously the game wouldn't have near the intensity of a W.B.C. game, and it was likely played just to keep the Koreans from getting rusty. While I didn't see it, I would assume that the Koreans didn't use their best pitchers or fielders (maybe for a couple of at-bats).
The Americans and other teams that have a lot of M.LB.'ers are at a disadvantage as they have just started playing again while a good majority of the other nations have been playing Winter Ball. Just look at how many injuries the U.S. had.
While Team Canada didn't play well enough to advance, it would have been nice to see Rich Harden, Ryan Dempster, Erik Bedard, Jeff Francis and Adam Lowen in the pitching rotation. |

In what way are Korea & Japan not all-star teams too? Their players are drawn from throughout their respective professional leagues.
They do however display better teamwork than the US. I wonder why that is. Its less about ego? Their attention to the fundamentals & the niceties of "small ball" are effective too.
ForceOne: Koreans & Japanese play winter ball? News to me. By that reasoning, where are the Venezuelans, Dominicans, & Cubans, teams all loaded with raw talent?
Go Korea! |

In baseball, any team can beat any other on any given day. The best teams may win 100 out of 162 in the major leagues. |

"Always"
Right, this being the 2nd classic.
Are you from the Dominican or something? Calm down.
Most of the players in the tourney are pro's, and take it very seriously. |

Go Korea! |
Can you please explain to me how Korea displays better teamwork? People just seem to throw this statement out of left field without giving any evidence.
In addition, Korea doesn't really play small ball. They hit many homeruns. I believe they've hit more homeruns than any other team in the WBC.
Please stop saying things that you know nothing about. |

Major league baseball in the U.S. and Canada has been hurt by the steroid/human growth hormone/juiced-up balls, bats, greedy agents, misguided unions, lousy Commisioners, designated hitters - and everything else that has detracted from the basic art of the game.
Japan and Korea showed how the game used to be played. It used to be the "national pastime" in the U.S., inspiring young and old alike. In Korea, they're just becoming captivated by the game, and it was practically a national holiday for them to watch their team play in the final ... |

Its interesting, when I just home a bit ago watching PTI, Around the Horn, Sweaty Sports Journalist Shout Controversial Opinions for Ratings, ect. They all basically agreed that the thing was stupid and should be called off. Worried about player safety ect. It's kinda nice to see people so into it here, that game today sold me on it. |

South Koreans aren't so much baseball fans as they are South Korea fans. Just a means to an end really. |
