no honey - and that's one of the first meals I'll be looking for when I get home this summer!

coleslaw you can make - they do have some bottled dressings for it; hushpuppies I've actually made here and shared w/Ks and they go over really well - especially when I offer some chili sauce to dip them in

but catfish, alas, not indigenous here.

Hush Puppies as in the shoes, right? Yes you can buy them here. Overly priced, though. Their flagship store is in Myeong-dong.

I can't tell if she's serious or not.

If you want all of that, chances are you;ll have to make it yourself. Catfish is available here as well as all the other ingredients to make hush puppies and cole slaw, since the first two are fried products and don't require an oven. Just google some recipes and go for it.

Fried catfish is good but I'd like some blackened catfish covered with a hot crawfish and remoulade sauce.

I know this sounds gruesome, but I kill fish with my hands; not for the joy of watching something die as it's not a pleasant feeling to kill things, but for food as they're special delicacy. I've been doing it since I was a little kid with a rod and reel, but have met so many people who find it appalling and sick to please read no further to hear about my recent fish kill.

I bought live meggi catfish at a small sashimi restaurant in my town last week. I paid 10,000 won for 2 10 inch slender half eel half catfish looking meggi; not cheap, but pretty cool thing to see and eat the catfish in another land. They're not big and abundant like at home despite the climate being similar. Since my city water is clean mountain spring source, I let them swim around in my big kitchen sink for 2 days to purify the meat as we carnivorous anglers do at home with a fish tank. Ater pulling off the skin, chopping the heads off, and scooping the guts out, I battered the white catfish meat in egg and seasoned corn powder and fried it in corn oil. Very delicious. You can also use zuccini squash too. Mushrooms are the bomb to fry like this. I got the corn powder on Gmarket.

I also bought live rainbow trout just like from home still flopping around and rushed them home as I know they die in 10 minutes and it's not good to let them die with their guts still in em'. It's only a 5 minute walk from my apartment so I killed them live. I baked them a few nights ago. They were good, but not as good as the ones I caught in a real trout stream back home as they're farm raised. Lucky to get an oven in the deal as I hear most teachers don't have an oven like most western apartments have.

I'm looking for a lake or pond to fish, but no luck yet. Also severly missing my Spring crappie, bass, and big catfish action.

well - that surprises me - I look at the fish in Emart and other stores and haven't ever seen anything that looks like catfish - either fillets or a whole one

where did you buy them ? or see them?

There's also a fish at Emart that looks like a flounder where one side is white and the other is dark. They are frozen and have the heads cut off already. Usually, you'll see a big open freezer of these loose 6 to 8 inch long fillets with a lady, bags, and a scale next to it. You get like 6 or 8 of them for 10,000 won.

These are tasty to fry up. Haven't ever seen freshwater fish in a market of any sort yet other than this one restaurant where they eat meggi and trout raw.

I'd think with the status of Pirates of the Caribbean, Long John Silvers would be a natural for Korea......

all that fried fish, the hushpuppies, AND the cole slaw? PLUS all those great pirate hats..... a natural, all the way around! Hong Kong and Singapore have The John already.... how long must we wait? Evil or Very Mad
