|
|
I would be at the lowest pay scale of the public school system which is 1.8m won... realistically how much would I likely get at a hagwon? what is typical for a hagwon? Is 2.2 very likely? the difference between 1.8 and 2.2 seems to be pretty significant...
Thanks |

I guess that would depend on you. It seems pretty easy to land a job at 2.3 million these days. Public school teachers get more vacation time and do a bunch of seat warming in many cases. Depending on your nationality, you may also be exempt from taxes for the first two years at a public school. Public schools are far less likely to rip you off. I rolled the dice, and I work at a hagwon. I enjoy saving the extra money.
That being said, there are often possibilities for overtime at public schools which can increase your salary substantially. It all boils down to your school and your relationship with the powers that be. |

I think if you get a job at a hagwon then you should be able to get at least 2.2-2.4/month. I got 2.0 4 years ago, and that was with zero experience. I'm now at a public school and get better pay and a hell of a lot more vacation than I would at a hagwon. That being said, I've paid my dues and worked my way up to improve my job conditions. I make 2.5 at my PS, with another 450k/month in OT |

you can quite easily make more with PS as many do an afterschool program that is also within the 8-30-4.30 schedule.
for hagwon, I would ask for 2.3 minimum and you can get that quite easily with zero experince.....recruiters will always low ball you. |

JasperTeach - it's money vs. vaca time - that's the main diff
you can always suck it up at a hakwon your first year, take a nice long holiday then come back and do a ps gig - by then you'll know your way around a bit, have some experience, etc.
I'm glad I did a hakwon my first year here - ps is no picnic w/the huge class sizes and little or no assistance from the K co-t so weigh the ins and outs before you decide.
just beware hakwons are notorious for screwing the NET on contracts, is all - of course ps can too but you will get paid on time, etc., and have sick days also. |

last year, I was offerred 2.3 starting at a hagwon, with possibility of increase after several successful months (which I'm guessing would've been perhaps up to 2.4 at 6 month mark or something like that)
the public school position was 2.0 gepik, but because it's a factory area, it's designated as a rural zone, so my effective starting was 2.1
I had no seatwarming during vacation times so that made my decision VERY easy. I'll take 2 months of paid vacation vs 10-14 days, rather than an extra 200 or 300 won a month every day of the week and Sunday.
one after school classes effectively makes up the $ difference, which sucks from the standpoint of having to be in the same goddamn building for 9 hours in a day (WAY TOO LONG), but the vacation time still makes it worthwhile. |

Very valid point. However, it appears the OP is looking at Seoul (or Busan or Incheon, otherwise the starting salary wouldn't be 1. . With a run of the mill SMOE position, the OP won't get any rural bonuses nor will he get extra vac days. One would be comparing 2.3mill per month with 10 days vacation to 1.8mill/month with 21 days vacation. Over the year the difference in income is 6.5million won. (I included severence, but not pension). Are 11 vacation days worth 6.5million? Sure he may get some overtime, but that is NOT guarentee.
Personally, at a salary of 1.8, I'd look into hagwons. The difference between 1.8 and 2.3 is a whopping 28%. Obviously, if you were looking at another location, and you are comparing 2.0 or 2.1 to 2.3, then it's a different ball game. (The difference is only 9-15%). |

agreed that at 500K plus, the equation changes. |
