I was out to dinner with some Korean friends, and a Korean professor working for Ewha Womens University. According to this teacher, the foreigners at Ewha are overworked, and very unhappy. This professor specifically noted complaints about grading lots of writing. This person also said that there is a lot of fighting between Korean and foreign staff members.
I had always considered Ewha to be one of the top places in Seoul to work at, and would like to work there some day. Now I'm not so sure.
Can anyone add some personal experience to this from the foreigner end of things? |

out of idle curiosity, so would I. It's always noted it's one of the best and best paying unis in the country and super competitive re getting hired. |

Maybe the disgruntled professor is disgruntled because he thinks that grading papers is getting in the way of his soju time?
I don't think I can understand how a professor can be upset about grading papers. |

Boo hoo. I have to grade writing, too, plus grading video projects, oral/audio projects, and marketing pitches. I suck it up because it part of my job (that, and the fact it was my choice to assign everything in the first place).
Teachers complaining about grading? What's next? Complaining about public speaking and talking in front of large groups of students every day? |

People seem to forget how easy this job actually is. So, you have to grade a few papers. Don't professors usually have less actual classes? I always laugh when my coworker complains about her Friday schedule being the longest. She has to work 7 hours on Friday, as opposed to the usual 4 or 5.
Get a fucking real job back home and work 8 hour days and probably nowhere near home.

The professor who told me all of this was Korean.
This individual was merely repeating the feedback he/she was getting from foreigners working at Ewha, and I'm guessing meeting information. It was not another foreigner complaining to me (a foreigner).
I'm surprised, too.
Next time I see this person (should be soon) I will ask if there is a language academy situation involved. That's one question I forgot to ask. |

Heard that it was one of the better places to work, no caps on the number of contract renewals and an older, more experienced foreign English teaching faculty. Not sure of the name of the specific program, though.
But - which English program at Ewha?
There are often more than 1 or 2 different programs where EFL is taught in universities and they offer different pay, responsibiliites, benefits, and work conditions. A lot of universities have a "Unigwon" in addition to the faculty English Department, Foreign Language Dept. or academic English skills program. |
