A little about myself, certified teacher (three different states), ten years experience. Had the phone interview last week, was told last night my and other certified teachers were denied. Still not sure what I did wrong lol. I guess that I will have to try somewhere different...any suggestions? By the way, I feel like a total loser now.

They might just be looking for a monkey to dance around and sing songs and play hangman to edutain the students. Try and University or GEPIK. Or you can also apply to one of the better hogwans.Epik is something you join when you no longer qualify for unemployment benefits at home.

If you join Epik you become a bitter old man like Steve Shertzer. Or a dancing monkey teching kids to" Role Role Role a joint"

They have to give you a reason you are denied a position for EPIK.

Maybe you are more than 55 yrs ? or something alarmed them on your health statement such as you have diabetes ? Or your photo indicated you were very obese ?
Or maybe you had something in your qualifications that did not pass. For example the country where your diploma was from.
Maybe you had a lot of requests, or wanted to bring your wife and 2 children or a dog?
All of these things are not denial reasons in themselves, but having a few issues that may be hard to work around for EPIK may have worried them, so they denied you.

Did you go through a recruiter ? if so demand to get the reason for your denial. They must have been told why. EPIK do not usually turn many people down.

OP, your username is Koreanfatguy.

I don't want to make assumptions, but it could be that you are denied because you are Korean.

You could be the best teacher in the world, with years of experience under your belt. If you don't have the citizenship, and the University Degree from one of the "English" countires, then you are out of luck.

Why do you think a public school position in Gyeonggi-do is different/better than any other province? Rolling Eyes

Some recruiters ain't hiring at the moment. You're trying to get a job mid-sem. They just had a second orientation.

As a certified teacher with 10 years experience, you should be looking at the Hong Kong NET scheme.

With your experience, you would quite a nice salary as the HK program recognizes experience and you get a bump up the salary ladder for every year you have...and of course once you are in...there are yearly raises.

Timing is not great...but if you started right now...you might get through the process by September.

no not korean, no health problems, under 35 lol...recruiter said there were two or three others denied...dont know for sure. I chose the name because fat people are happier lol. Still have no clue as to why I was denied...that was the recruiter's statement. Was looking into Korea because I have had Korean students before and love the food...besides I am a history buff, would love to see Korean War sites.

That's probably why you got the cold shoulder. The gatekeepers there don't want a serious teacher who knows what he/she is doing. There is also another possible explanation--Could it be the white face with seniority won't allow you to pass the gate as he, with his non-education degree and flimsy TESOL cert, knows he can't hold a candle to a real teacher with real creds and real experience? I've seen this happen in this business.

Wow, T.,
As a scientist in the states and definitely needed a break from crime labs I feel that although I do not have a degree in education and only have the flimsy 100 plus hrs for TESOL, I certainly do not feel that I am not capable of teaching here as I also taught chemistry labs at uni's in the states...hmmm your post made me think about that ...comment ..you made.

Well, chew on this, Herr Dim. I've seen a scenario similar to this at a school in Thailand, btw:

You, a guy with a master's degree in education and 20+ years teaching experience in California, are in Korea. You're trying to land a job, and have a wet-behind-the-ears granola-type college grad (not an education major) with a mere cert (with wet ink) giving you your interview and determining your fate. His favorite band is something like the Wonder Girls, and he loves watching extreme bicycle jumping on EXPN. Can you dig it?

Welcome to TESOL.

I don't know many EPIK teachers, but I have met a couple of over 40 guys who are certified teachers with 15-20 years experience so I'd take some of the cynical comments with a grain of salt. I'd put it down to bad timing perhaps, maybe try again or go for an international school if that's possible, that's what I would be aiming for if I had the right piece of paper.

If you're just looking for a job, here's a stateside school near my little burg that is losing 14 teachers and 4 principals to retirement. One is the ESL:

Did you use the Koreanfatguy name with the recruiter? If so change that.
Apply with other recruiters -- cause they always have ads up on here for Epik.

How do you keep a license in 3 states? Cause most states make you cancel all but one.

Net scheme - requires in person interviews.

International schools do too.

There are massive teacher layoffs in the USA right now - due to the economy.
