I have just started talking to recruiters. I plan on asking for pictures of the apartments that the schools I am looking at will provide. I will be going over there in August or September and my fiance will join me after he graduates in December so I need a place that isn't too small with atleast a full sized bed. I also would love to live in a newer apartment with the built in storage compartments and whatnot. I was looking at youtube videos of different esl teacher's apartments and some were kind of nasty looking with weird colors in the kitchen and bathrooms. So I was wondering if anyone knows schools that put their teachers up in more modern and new apartments? I am really wanting to go with a public school, but If a hagwon offers a nicer place I would rather go with them. Also I was thinking that if I were in an area in the suburbs or more outside or Seoul I might be more likely to get a better place? What areas have the nicest apartments? Thanks in advance for your feedback and help.

My Reccomendation

DO NOT work with a recruiter. MOST of them deal with the majority of Shady schools and thier first order of business is to try and unload the lowest paying job on you. There are MOre than enough places on line that have their own ads and do not use recruiters

try them first.

That being said, if you wanna go with the public school, they do their next round of hiring for September. NOne of my buddies have terrible or gaudy apartments.

I went a different route though. I put down 30 million won of my own for Key money. I have a three bedroom apartment with an awesome kitchen , new flooring and wallpaper, AND i make money off of my housing allowance. You usually do not get this from a hagwon, as a hagwon is only willing to invest 10 million key money and pay about 500 000 for rent. So in return you get a crappy apartment, tiny, and older.

If you have the ability to go this route somehow, it would be much better for you.

Other than that, yes ask about the teacher you are replacing, and ask for their email address. Then ask that peson if they would give you a full description of the house and pictures. Make it clear to the employer that you want THEIR apartment if you are hired, as many times another employee wants the housing ( if its better than theirs) and they move in the vacating teachers apartment while you are stuck moving into the sardine can they vacated.

As for specific schools, sorry I cant help you, I have been touch and go with most of my apartments.

However, you have less of a chance at getting crap if you go for a job in BUNDANG. its just south of Seoul, but still a part of it. They have a subway line and multiple buses that get you into the heart of seoul in about 20 minutes. The area is much newer, so the run down apartments are much scarcer.

OH, and just so you know, this thread isnt really travel related. I just said the same thing to another guy who posted E2 Visa requirements.

You would have more people able to help you if you posted this in the FAQ, or job related section

thanks. yeah I thought I put it under general questions and somehow I must have accidentally put it under "travel". sorry. I will definitely check out bundang. So far I have been offered a job in Nowon and Yeouju. The job in Yeouju is exactly what I'm looking for (all girls high school), but its kind of out in the sticks and I want to be closer to the city. Hopefully I can find an all girl's school in bundang looking for a esl teacher.
