I don't know how many of you use last.fm, the previously free internet radio station and recommendation engine. I do and I was shocked to discover that after years of free service they will now charge a monthly fee. It is only $3.00 a month, but I think this will kill over half of their user base. Here is an article about it.

Thoughts? Is this a bad business strategy for the London based site?

I agree that they are very good at matching and recommending music that I never would have heard of otherwise. I just don't see why they are not charging Brits, Canucks, Yanks, and Crouts (I mean that affectionately, of course) for the service. Seems like most other countries could use the free service more than these countries. I do see their point though. They get their revenue from those buying mp3s. I guess the people on those countries are the only ones buying mp3s.

I figured a general announcement for donations would have been wiser, mainly b/c a lot of people refuse to pay even miniscule fees for quality music services. Oh well, I'll still use them. It's better than being denied by Pandora because of country restrictions.
