The one person who can prevent this, especially if it's at another school, is a powerful principal.

Oh yes. In fact, you can be forced to do several camps.

your contract almost surely states you MAY be asked (or now for 2009, Gepik for e.g. has changed it to WILL be asked) to do camps during the time school isn't in session for winter/summer.

You retain the right to take your allowable vacation days during that timeframe (some schools try to screw people out of that by scheduling camps anyways) but if they say you have to do a camp, you'll have to do a camp.

I had no camps to do last year, though my predecessor had to do one week camps during winter and summer breaks (no deskwarming otherwise).

When the pointy headed gepik inspectors "inspected" my school and its records a month or so ago, they complained we didnt have any camps.

So... I'm almost sure now I'll have to do a weeklong camp during summer and winter breaks.

as my vp said - I know these are useless for our students but it's a kind of duty...

frakly I've never done a camp and I have NO effing idea how and what to do for 4 hours each day for a full week, much less several (like others have to do) , with a room full of completely DISinterested students, no less.

even if your school doesn't do one you may be asked to do one at another school - or - at more than one school

more unlikely if you were hired by the school itself, via a recruiter, rather than being "farmed out" or "assigned" by the regional dept of education (like GEPIK, EPIK, SMOE, etc)

1. You have to read your contract to see what it says. Generally, we have to teach a certain number of classes, or hours if you work in a hagwon, in order to get our full salary. Camps are one way which seem to have designed to "fulfill" that we teach our quota of classes.
2. If you are in EPIK, you can be assigned to teach at summer/winter camps by the POE. If they're nice, they ask you. If not, they assign you.
3. Having to do camps can originate from a group like the parents who want it for their kids.
4. And, I disagree that it's totally pointless for kids. I've been at camps where the students were far from disinterested but some of the NET's were.
5. When I was in GEPIK, I had to teach a regular summer and winter camp for a week at my school. The first time, I made my own curriculum but thereafter, I used a commercial textbook. My former school did not want to pay me to make my own. I did not mind.
6. I also had to go to a certain away camp for five days when I was in GEPIK for a certain city. It was part of our contract. It wasn't that bad.

I got hit with 4 weeks of winter camp and then they had me do another 2 weeks for what they called spring break. It was the last 2 weeks in February.

We got Fridays off, so it seemed more like 5 total. Overtime pay was included but not really worth it if you can make other plans.

Make sure you talk to them about this unless you want to do what I had to do. You'll get some overtime, and if you have nothing planned, then you can save up the vacation days. I am using the rest of my winter vacation time for Friday and all next week. Ask your school if this is possible before agreeing to do all the camp hours.

What's worse is when they're completely uninterested.

hehe

uninterested would have been the better choice, as the words have evolved where today disinterest is typically used to display lack of selfish motive or a sense of neutrality.

but I used it more along the lines of its original meaning:

disinterested
Pronunciation: \-təd\
Function: adjective
Date: circa 1612
1 a: not having the mind or feelings engaged : not interested <telling them in a disinterested voice Tom Wicker> <disinterested in women J. A. Brussel> b: no longer interested <husband and wife become disinterested in each other T. I. Rubin>

despite the supposed 'evolution' and the supposed error, as shown here:

http://languagetips.wordpress.com/2009/03/26/weekly-language-usage-tips-uninterested-or-disinterested-infer-or-imply/

when I describe a person's voice or tone of voice I have always understood (in literature, and press) the usage of disinterested voice, etc to mean lack of interest.. hence uninterest.

I can't recall ever reading about an uninterested voice though?

Talk about splitting hairs, the reasons to differentiate the two are rather subjective. Depending on how you see it, it could go either way.

I liked getting overtime. Busan is scrapping it, though. So, it's camps for no pay. Sure it's what the contract says, but that just means the contract sucks. And Busan EPIK sucks, too.
