Greetings! I am an American ESL teacher. I have accepted an ESL opportunity, in Jinju and will arrive, in mid January. I thought it might be a great idea to locate other foreign ESL teachers, in Jinju, pre-arrival. |

Greetings (said with hand extended outwards, fingers spread, in the vulcan gesture of peace and goodwill).
I lived there for three years, about three years ago. Very nice city, with beautiful surrounding countryside (if you have transport to get around). I will be going back there for two weeks in January to vist my girlfriend. What school will you be working in?
Ummm..... just out of curiosity, are you a native english speaker?
Not sure if it is still the case now, but the italian restuarant Zio Riccos (or somehting like that) near the centre of town (between the main redlight alley and Baskin Robbins) used to be one of the major foreign hangouts. I was usually too busy riding around the countryside to participate in most of the pasty-white-foreigner whinge fests however. But often there was cool music and so on.
Anyway, greetings. Live long and prosper. |

Wow an Italian restaurant is the main hangout for foriegners? Sounds like a blast! I wish I had found that place when I visited a few months ago. I thought two nights in Jinu were 1 too many. If you get bored there is also an alley behind the hospital were old men in hospital gowns with IV drips hang out and drink soju and smoke while eating food from street vendors. |

A waygook friend and I go to Zio Riccos at least once a month and we never see other waygooks when we do, though it tends to be saturday and sunday afternoons rather than evenings. No music that time of day but great ambience, the place really is a slice of back home, except for the cake bread served with the pasta and their cancelling of lasagna from the menu. My friend knows the cook and one of the servers speaks fluent English so all in all a decent eat.
There's a Kraze Burger that just opened across from the Galleria, and we'll be checking that out Sunday afternoon. If it's the same as the Co-Ex mall location in Seoul then I'll be happy, as that's quality stuff regardless of the price.
The best thing about Jinju is the walkabouts, most obviously the riverside park. A nice relaxing place to be. I don't live in Jinju but chose a rural town within an hour of it. Busan isn't far away for more metro stuff. Life is good. |

The Jinju Lantern Festival was amazing this year (my first time going). Jinju seemed like a nice little town. |

Thank you for all the positive responses!!
My assignment, as an English Conversation Instructor, will be working with Korean Air Force Officers and their families. I will be living and working on the base, of the Foreign Language Institute at Air Education and Training Command. I understand the base is about 15 minutes outside of Jinju.
In response to one poster: English is my native language. I am an American citizen, from Pittsburg, PA. I have lived all over the United States and Europe.
I am reading as much as I can about Korean culture. There is an authentic Korean restaurant, here in Pensacola, FL. The owner's family is teaching me some things. I had a lesson using metal chop sticks Wednesday night. I shall learn some Korean language too. |

I realize this is an old topic but...
My boyfriend and I are considering a position in Jinju. Seems like a nice place (I like nature) but since my boyfriend is a city guy, I don't know if there is enough for him to do.
Is Busan or another large city pretty accessible? Are there any foreign-friendly dart bars or other low key bars? We aren't really into dance clubs -- just having a drink and playing some pool/darts or chatting.
Thanks for any help! |
