So, when I opened Chosun Ilbo today, the headline was : Shocking, another female talent committed suicide.

News translated by Babel Fish

It took me only 5 seconds to feel sad about this young girl. I know people kill themselves everyday and everywhere on the planet, but I have never seen so many celebrities do so in other countries.

It reminds me how often I see Korean people( especially girls) cry, just about a hour ago, a girl in my office came back from the washroom with her red eyes, oh, I dont have to ask what happened then I can tell she was scolded by her senior...its not new to me anymore.

Korean people hold their self-esteem high, but on the other hand, they are so susceptible to negative emotion imposed by themselves due to nonsense ( in my eyes).

Can they do anything to stop killing themselves?

they do seem incredibly fragile, emotionally speaking.

so overburdened by what society around them thinks and the expectations placed upon them by others.

Not sure what the answer is though.

There are plenty of such people in the West also, but apparently they find other release valves, or spend tons of money on useless shrinks, etc.

p.s. hey just clicked on the link.

LOVE the translation! HAHAAHHAAHAHHAAHAHAHAH

Young actress found dead in apparent suicide

A young Korean actress has been found dead at her home in southern Seoul in what appears to be a suicide, police said Tuesday.

The body of Woo Seung-yeon, who played a supporting role in several films and worked as a model, was discovered by her live-in friend, police said, noting she appeared to have hanged herself.

The 26-year-old actress left an alleged suicide note, saying "I love my family. I'm so sorry to leave early."

Woo's family members and friends told police investigators that she has been under severe stress after recently failing to pass auditions for new roles, Yonhap News reported.

Stop glamourising it in the news, stop making movies, TV shows, music videos, and songs about it, stop presenting it as an idealised view of suicide as a way to show them all, and that may curb the number of suicides.

If she didn't leave a suicide note explaining all the times she's been forced to 'entertain' important people in the industry, or been forced to *beep* herself out, she's died in vain.

Interestingly a student of mine has a good friend who's an actress/talent currently at the lower end of the scale.

The poor girl gets invited to parties where she wears a number or some other kind of identifying mark. The 'guests' of the party then (secretly) offer the amount of money they'd be willing to spend to have a.. err.. private party.. with her. In a good party she might get several offers of 500k or 800k or even 1m or so. It's totally up to her whether she accepts any of them. It's just an 'opportunity' to make some money before she becomes really famous.

Most of the guests are doctors/lawyers/businessmen and other similar sorts.

Her agent can't promise her good-jobs4whoring. Maybe she has a bad agent. Maybe she has a good agent. Probably she doesn't have a good agent.

Actually, if she wants said fame then she really doesn't have a choice. In Korea it's, "Put out or get off the casting couch."

Nearly all of the top female actresses/singers/models in Korea have vigorously and enthusiastically worked the circuit you speak of.

It's gotta be fish in a barrel if a boyfriend or husband felt like offing an actress. Just make it look like a suicide. That note seems suspect to me.

Here is her page over at hancinema

2 movies, but one of them is a recent movie that seems fairly popular. She might have failed some auditions..but this might have gotten her some good exposure too.

Maybe I am a hardass, but I do see a recurring theme with this and the previous suicide by an actresses....GREED.

Somehow, neither of them would be happy with doing something else, but would only settle for a continued life in the spotlight and gracing covers of magazines. The poor girl who was used by her manager to do things for VIP's was not "forced" at all. She had a choice. She could have left manager, perhaps sacrificing her career, and gone on to do something else. However it seems to me that she was willing to give up her dignity and perform for those VIP's to keep the money rolling in from new parts/auditions. It's hard to be in her shoes, but as a respected actress, I would think that if she came out in public, told what was going on and walked away, even though the manager would have denied it of course she could have gone about her life and possibly a continued acting career.

Here in the most recent case, much of the same thing. The article states that she felt depressed and saddened by her failure to get new roles for different jobs, so rather that get another job (of course will not pay as well and make you a star) she chose to end her life..rather than live like normal folks.

I feel for both of the families who have to live with this, but I have no sympathy for anyone who simply gives up their life for what seems to be a reason that revolves around money/fame/fortune/respect.
