has anyone ever taken more time then that alloted in the contract for vacation? i see we get 14 workdays, but if we wanted to take more during the break could we do it and take it unpaid?
has anyone ever taken more time then they were supposed to? can you be fired for that?
i think i read on here before that people took time they werent supposed to and were docked pay but not terminated.... |

take it and don't tell anyone.
I know for a fact Korean teachers do it frequently, especially for short trips. They're supposed to file paperwork and write a report, because any travel outside of the country is supposed to be for professional development reasons. Not all do.
if you don't have to deskwarm and your school doesn't check up on you, the odds of you getting busted are slim.
I don't know what the repercussions would be if you were, but a dock in pay rather than a firing seems like the more logical step, unless they don't like you to begin with. |

| Right. Broaching the subject is not a good idea. I just found out today that I'll get 25 days off instead of my anticipated 2 week summer break. The school doesn't expect me to come in, according to my co-teacher--and that's good enough for me! |

| If you get more time off than your contracted vacation days, don't tell anyone - they'll get jellous and complain. The result will not be that they get more time off, it will be that you get less! |

Depends on the school I guess. If you are on good terms and there aren't classes, they might let you go. Initially, they will say no and that you can't do certain things.
After you work there and get to know them, back scratching can happen. |

| I've had more than my 20days within the first 6 months. Not all of it is practical holiday but I still get 2 months in the winter and 1 in the summer. I was expecting only my 20days off when I first arrived but then realised how it works at many schools and just decided to keep stum and take the time off as it comes. |

I thought I'd jump in here and add a comment. This place is so cock-eyed ass-backward that most anything goes at times. What you can expect one day--changes the next. It's like a vew through a window with a heavy fog...with sparkling smog. I've gone on trips on occassion during Winter spells...without a hitch...then this year was different. I took a trip home to Canada and then, down to Mexico. They docked me 500,000 won for the time away from the desk. I had a great flight deal--so I just added in the loss. How anyone can stand to stay chained to a desk here is beyond me. I even had a principal once tell me that I did not have his "official permission" to go for a bike ride on my lunch break...which I did as he watched me bike off into the Hermet kingdom sunset. I brought him back a fresh bag of rotten kimchee mouthwash and told him to simply stuff it up his ass. Or, better still...string around your neck and add a little flavour to your Western neck-tie King Hermit.
Korean Spasdicks galore assisted by foreign charmers We're here for the money honey...and sometimes a good long vacation to renew the old kimchee burners. |

zebra, I'd file that under "battles worth and not worth fighting".
In Korea you're expected to ask for permission to leave school grounds (though not sure if this is the case during lunch hour)
I ask and go wherever I want whenever I want. |

| And then you have to sign in a book when you leave. It's like being in the military. |

I thought I'd jump in here and add a Quixotic comment or two. This place is so cock-eyed and ass-backward, that most anything goes at times. What you can expect one day as the norm--changes the next. It's like a view through a window with a heavy fog outside...with "sparkling smog" from the big Seoul chemical bog, clouding the sky. I've gone on trips on occassion, mainly during the Winter spells...without a hitch or complaint...but alas this year was different. I took a trip home to Canada, and then, down to Mexico. They docked me 500,000 won for the time away from the desk. I had had a great flight deal--so I just added in the loss as an "unexpected" blooper from the Kimchee God on high. The time away from here was important at the time. How anyone can stand to stay chained to a desk here is beyond me. Well, I don't ever sit and rattle chains for senior monkeys--sorry. I even had a principal once tell me that I did not have his "official permission" to go for a bike ride on my lunch break [!]...which I did as he watched me bike off into the Hermit Kingdom's brownish afternoon haze. I happily brought him back a fresh bag of rotten kimchee mouthwash, and told him to simply stuff it up his ass. Or, better still...try stringing this around your neck and thus add a little flavour to your Western neck-tie gimickry dude. "It also actually fits your high IQ." He just grinned and said "OK." You can go for a bike ride
Korean Spasdicks galore assisted by foreign snake oil charmers That's what this place is. We're here for the money honey...and sometimes a good long respite to renew the old kimchee burners. Hi got to run--late for my privates!

zebra, how did they find out you were gone?
the good news is that you were docked in pay not fired....so i think if thats the penalty it may be worth doing! |

I'm struggling with how to approach this as well. I want to start a job in Taiwan in middle to late August, but my EPIK contract doesn't expire until August 28th, and I NEED to go back to America for a visit at some point, which will require at least 2 weeks. This would be no problem if it wasn't for mandatory ed dep't camps.
A friend of mine who is going back to school in Canada starting September 1st asked his school about leaving early and they said they would talk to the higher-ups and he'd probably get to go a week early. I think that means as long as it doesn't coincide with the mandatory ed dep't camps he's off the hook. |
