Does anyone know of any software that my students can work on at home, but where I can check on their progress from work or home? I've been looking, but I haven't found much. Any suggestions would be very helpful.

try installing a bb(like this one only a newer/ better version) on a free server, for direct contact you could try www.eyeballchat.com

Are you talking about online quizzes and tests of sorts? There are programs for that, as well not too hard to code your self.

PM me if you are looking for something different, maybe I can help you code something up.

Are you talking about viewing real-time? I don't know of too many folks that would allow even a friend access. Here's a few sugestions:

If you just need to check progress, I'd suggest ICQ. You can set up private chats and just drag in whomever is online. You can also send/receive files.

Yahoo is similar and has good video/audio chat as well. Adding a webcam is good as well.

I did some searching and came up with some stuff for teachers. Most probably won't help, but someone may find use for the links:

http://www.newfreeware.com/home/teaching/en/ Freeware for Teachers

http://www.teachingsoft.com/ Free Grade Tracking software

http://www.churchillhouse.com/english/downloads.html Teaching materials for teachers of English.

http://www.essentialskills.net/ Home Schooling Software, but has phonics, etc,

http://www.soft411.com/software/english-teaching-exercises.html Looks like shareware stuff for teachers. Might be worth a try.

http://www.eltweb.com/liason/Software/ More trial software for teachers

I'd bet other posters know of more.

Almost what i was looking for, but... What I need is a website or something they can log into at home and do test or assignments or whatever... and then later I can check and see what scores they got, what they need to work on, stuff like that.

I this is something that you'd be interested in.

There is a fairly new company based out of Seoul/Ilsan that's called "We Learn Here." www.welearnhere.com

They offer an interactive online program where students (mainly marketed towards kids) can work from home. Teachers can log on to check their students' progress and correct assignments/tests that have been submitted through the internet. Students view lessons and can record their own voice for key sentences and then listen to it played next to a native speaker's for help with pronunciation. Once the student is happy with it, these recordings can then be submitted to the teacher for grading.

There is also good in-class material. I dont teach it personally, but I have test driven it and I like what I've seen. It's particularly good for speaking which is what we're using it for at my hagwon for a winter intensive speaking class.

I don't know exactly what they're charging per student...I think right now they're focusing on marketing it through hagwons, but it'd work just the same for a small group.

If you want to know any more send me a PM...the district manager is a native English speaker, which is nice too if you're doing stuff on your own.

Try Starcraft. The kids really dig it. You can get them hooked in no time.

I found another site that might be closer to what you need. http://onlineroom.net/ is a hosted website for teachers. Not free, but $20 USD/year is cheap. They have a demo site as well.
