My contract with SMOE is up in August and I would like to renew but I can not commit to a full year. Is it possible to do a 6 month contract? Has anyone tried to negotiate this before?
Thanks |

In the past, SMOE would not do this, even for their teachers of highest qualifications.
What you can do is quit your 2nd contract. For example, 6 months into your 2nd contract. You will still be owed your 12 months of severance (but no more) and your 18 months of pension. If you take your round trip ticket home between 1st and 2nd contracts, you'll have to pay back half of it IF you quit before 6 months into the 2nd contract. You'll probably not be hired in the future by SMOE. You may piss off your school, but you could also be transparent with your school AFTER you start working your 2nd contract.
SMOE forces good teachers to do this b/c they won't negotiate 6 month contracts for re-signing teachers. |

That's interesting. I wonder if all public schools in Korea think the same way.
I'm trying to get a six-month extension with my public school in Chungnam, but I haven't heard a decision yet. They're entertaining the idea though. From what I've heard the only roadblock for me is the Chief of Administration at my school who apparently has a chip on his shoulder about me for some reason. My co-teacher, principal and vice principal are all on my side...so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. |

Depends on the system. As BB mentioned SMOE doesn't (though I am unsure if schools have the authority to do so if they really wanted). EPIK = who knows, but GEPIK = yes. It was in clear print in the 2007 handler's manual, and in the 2008 the new manual states that you cannot sign a first contract for 6 months. I'm living proof of this 6 months extension (2.5 years at current school) and another friend of mine in Bucheon (PS) is going through the process also. It's up to the school--at least with GEPIK. |

1.5 years ago, my friend's school was cool with it and wanted her to stay, even if for 6 months. SMOE shot that down immediately. |
