Hi Im going 2 South korea in August and I am asthmatic. I love to go out and was wondering what the story is with smoking there?
Is there any smoking ban (like in Ireland) or will I be choked?
If there isn't a smoking ban, do alot of people smoke there? - is there any way to out and avoid it? |

Smoking is ubiquitous here. It seems like 90% of the male population smokes (beginning around age 15) and smokes frequently. Basically, any enclosed spaces except schools and movie theaters are going to be your worst enemy.
Sorry to ruin your day haha |

Don't go to bars and you'll probably be OK unless you are extremely sensitive. You won't have a problem at most restaurants or in malls. Bars, though, are almost always full of smoke. |

woman smoke plenty too, but they are more discreet because men think they have an attitude or are a bad girl if they smoke in their prescence. Some hypocritical mo-fo's up in here.

Indeed, you might not like your trips to the bathroom in some restaurants. The female smokers puff away in there where they are hidden from the sight of the general population. My wife finds it seriously irritating as a non-smoker. |

Forget smoking....just breathing the air here is like smoking a pack a day. South Korea is definitely not the place for you. (cough) |

On dusty spring days, you could wear a mask as many people do here.
Being an ex-smoker, I'm not to bothered by smoke. Coming back from the billiards club a few nights ago, I was reaking of stale tobacco and had to change immediately. Stay out of such clubs and don't spend to long in some toilets, you'll be fine. I used to get asthma in Scotland (lovely air), it was caused more by my forceful breathing than anything else.
Once I learnt to breath differently, the asthma left. |

Before you come here, spend a week in Houston. See how a really polluted US city treats you. The overall pollution (as said above), is far worse than the pollution. |

Strangely enough as a smoker I prefer the smoking ban to the situation here. While I don't agree with the whole ban this ban that debacle going on in Europe I appreciate the smoking.
Back home I could go out and not stink of fags in the morning and when I did go outside for one the atmosphere would actually be pretty interesting. It's good to be able to chat to people outside the club.
To the point in question, you're fucked, smoking is everywhere, even in the non smoking areas. I love it when I see ashtrays in the toilet cubicles, when you gotta smoke you gotta smoke! |

We have a smoking ban in NZ as well. The one thing i did notice (even my non smoking friends noticed it as well), bars smell of stale beer, farts and BO. The casino I worked once the smoked cleared had a real problem with the stale beer (we cleaned very well) and BO |

Yeah I remember going to one of my favourite places and realising without smoke it smelled of BO and puke. I can never fathom why places that sell copious amounts of booze like to have carpets. That's where the smell hides. In fact in England I spend more time outside a club than inside it. |
