My officetel building has a really spacious rooftop area and I'd like to utilize it this summer for gatherings. I asked my coteacher how common it is for Koreans to use the rooftop and she said it's not common and that I'd have to ask my building manager/landlord for permission every time I want to use it.

Has anyone had experience dealing with landlords about having people on the roof? Since it's not common, I'm afraid he'll freak out and think that foreigners are having a crazy rager or something.

It's been suggested to me to just go ahead and do it without asking, but I'm really not the type to do that....

If it were me, I'd just go ahead and do it.

Something tells me that since you're not the type to just go and do something without permission, then you're probably also not the type who will let things get out of control and cause problems for your neighbors.

I suggest go ahead and doing it without asking Smile

It's always easier to ask for forgiveness than permission. . .

If your landlord allows you access, do it. Are they quiet for you? My neighbor slams his door all the time, the onion man starts hollerin' @ 6 in the morning, the clothing store across the street blasts hideous pop music, etc. Party!!

I guess I shouldn't have asked my CT about it initially- she's the only one who liaisons between me and my building manager, so if I go ahead and do it, I'll look like a dick since I basically went ahead and did it even though I was specifically told to ask for permission first....

Here's a tip. Go around at night with a pair or wire cutters and snip
the speaker wires of those noisy pests. If they continually re-attach
them, then jam a screwdriver through the front of the speaker into the
black paper that the speakers are made of. It is kind of like a speaker
lobotomy. Anyway, they should get the message.

My wife and I had rooftop BBQ parties at our last place. They went very well. We weren't very noisy and were quiet while walking up and down the stairs in the stairway. We only played acoustic guitars, banjo, mandolin, violin, etc.~ quietly unplugged so we wouldn't disturb the neighbors. We would quiet it down after 11 pm.

Now, here's the thing: the people on the top floor of your building really are the ones who have control over rooftop access. We were on the 5th floor (the top floor of the building). Thus, they're the one's you really should ask about it. You might want to invite some of your building tennants to join in as well. If they feel that they are included and a part of it, then they may be more easygoing about your party. We invited a few families and it was a lot of fun!

It also helps as well to always clean up after yourselves.
Best of luck to you!

I plan on utilizing my roof top as well for barbecues and shin digs. And I'm right on the beach so we get to enjoy the view and take late night dips. I can't wait! Seoulites eat your heart out!

If they're also invited and there's plenty of soju your neighbours will likely have no problem with it.

Depends on the rooftop. Are there many adjacent buildings of equal or greater height?

I say do it. The worst you'll get is a warning.

Was going to say the same, if there is any better opportunity for you to get to know the locals and your neighbours, I would like to know what it is. Booze is a great leveler with Koreans.
