I need to send some money via western union (my only options). What are the fees? I heard it was pretty steep?? Around 100,000 won??? I'm planning to send around 3,000,000 won

I dunno how much it costs to send money out of Korea, but if it helps, I had to pay $17 for the first $1000 to be wired into Korea from the U.S using Western Union.

I sent $1000 to Canada last year via Western Union (the recipient's only option). It was expensive -- about $75 as I recall. The bank teller chided me (in a nice way) for choosing a stupid method.

It isn't really your only option.

You can (but are not supposed to) convert the money to your local currency then put it in an envelope, go to FedEx or DHL and send it over. It won't cost W100,000.

I just received USD$7,000.00 from a person in the USA.

I collected it from the IBK (Industrial Bank of Korea).

The IBK (bank) gave the money to me as 9,235,000won cash.

The person told me that when they sent the $7,000.00 to me the fee paid was only USD$26.00.

To receive it - cost me nothing.

So the only fee paid was USD$26.00 by the person who sent it to me.

If you have a bank account in South Korea (any bank I think), you can have them wire money to an account back home for about 17,000 won.

If you have to do Western Union, it really depends on the amount. Go to your bank and they'll show you a chart with the prices.
