I'm no expert on baseball, but I heard half of an interesting conversation on the radio. Apparently, the Korean gov't is changing the rules to "control" their star players -- forcing them to play in the Korean leagues for 2 years before being allowed to leave the country to play overseas (like Major League Baseball). Then there was some other rule that a returning overseas player will be barred for at least six years?
Does anyone else know the full story?
I thought it sounded pretty cruel and controlling. |

I don't know how they could force them not to leave the country and play elsewhere. |

Apparently, that's exactly what it's all about.
It sounds as if the Chaebols (who have the teams and probably control the league) want their opportunity to make money off of the players first. If that's the case, it wouldn't surprise me in the least.
There were restrictions previously which (if I remember the story right) barred Korean players from returning to play in Korea. That didn't work well enough, so now they've come up with this.
It's all about keeping talent in the country to make a buck, in my opinion. |

That's kinda how Japanese teams handle players going to MLB. It won't work in Korea. No MLB team would bother. There are few Korean players worth the hassle. |

I can't be a law or that would be akin to legalizing slavery. But the gov't could make it rule that to be eligible for international play, a player must have played at least 2 years domestically.
Upon thinking about it, the gov't could force a player into playing in the KBL, by giving the player the option of 2 years playing baseball or 2 years in the military. |

Irrelevant.
How many Korean fans were glued to the TV and radio during the WBC? How many Amiercans were?
There's a reason certain countries' teams do well in tournaments like the WBC |

Off-topic...The OP's talking about Korean players in the MLB. Who's your favorite, Straphanger? Park Chan ho? |
Oh man, I don't care! If you're down in Daegu, you need to go out with the Bleacher Bums. It's all about the love of the game, man! Got nothing to do with the players or the stats. Just the game. |

The league is the best in the world. The players are from a multitude of countries.

Here's a list to help you since I'm sure you can't name (m)any of them.
True - 15 players over the last 10-20 years. A small percentage of the total.
How much dough does a good player get in K-Land. If a K-Player signs a fat contract in the U.S. and makes par what other players make, why would the K-player really give a shit if he came back to K-land and couldn't play for six years. Six years is a little steep, but 2-4 million USD should go a long way over here. |

They're only able to impose these restrictions because any labor union would be squashed immediately and players banned for life. |

If you fail to notice the differences between the competitions and reality, well... (honestly, I'm surprised that PR or Cuba didn't win the thing)
I'm a huge fan of K-baseball, Samsung particularly.
Korea's got a sizable chip on the shoulder when it comes to giving promising players a chance to make something in the foreign leagues.

There are barely any Koreans in the MLB to begin with. This is just gonna discourage teams from even bothering with the K's. |
