Anyway, I went to an ATEK meeting and the discussion focused on "making money". It was weird. I came to the meeting thinking the group was about helping people, esp., E-2s. But, no. I left a little sad because I thought I was going to meet some people who cared.

What I met was a group of power trippers.

One of the guys was keen on turning the local ATEK chapter into a recruiting agency with the money going into a pot for those E-2s in trouble. However, there was much discussion about how much officers should "make". I could see the pot shrinking monthly as it went to the officers' salaries.

So, I'm with Bass and Chicken in that there is a need for some other voice for the NET in the Korea.

IMO, ATEK does not represent Fs, Es, or anyone else but themselves. ATEK is going to be the largest "foreign" run recruiting agency in Korea. It may, one day, be bigger than daves.

Let's see.

Are you serious? That is sad and pathetic if so. So much for their 'representing' 25,000 teachers.

Also, Ithink i still have the addresses of the reporters ATEk has talked to, I am sure they would be happy to hear from you and get the other side of the story.

ATEK will never be bigger than Dave's for several reasons:

1) Dave setup a board that was original and years ahead of its time. It's the standard that all other boards strive to be but tend to fail miserably.

2) It is the most active with GENUINE new content (though at times controversial), but new and refreshing. Other boards don't get nearly the same amount of postings.

3) It has the highest placement of job ads. If you want to find a job in Korea fast, you search here first.

Dave's is one-stop shopping for the planet in ESL... ATEK will never reach that.

I always said that ATEK was in it for the money from the very beginning. No matter how many news articles you get printed, what people say and what they do are very very different things and easy to spot. So far, ATEK has:

1) deleted potentially incriminating material off their website when I was filing my complaint.

2) Backpedalled on their membership fees, but as you said are still 'very' interested in the potential money pool.

3) Copy and pasted a book and published it Lee Hyo Ri style.

4) Showed a very dual faced approach towards the interests of it's potential members and the people it claims to represent

5) Never took a sincere effort to simply say the truth and correct the 'facts' as they really were, since the errors were to their benefit.

Trust me on this one, AFEK won't be at all like ATEK. I already have a job, I don't need money from the desperate or uninformed who are being taken advantage from.
