Hi all-

I'll be studying at Seoul National for six months starting in September, and since my husband is coming with me and knows no Korean I was thinking it would be good if he took Korean classes (and he agrees). I have studied at Sogang before and know they're good for beginning levels, and so I was thinking that we could find an apartment on the the green line somewhere between Seoul National and Shinchon, but now I'm thinking it would be a lot easier if my husband just took classes at Seoul National, too, and if we lived closer. Does anyone have experience with level 1 and 2 classes at Seoul National? I've heard they're better than Yonsei about combining a fair amount of speaking with reading, writing, etc., but I want to do my research because I'm worried he'll get bored and lose motivation.

Language learning is like dieting; you only get improvements if you're doing it for yourself and you stick with it.

You can't learn the language for your better half, so the program won't matter half as much as the effort that he invests.

Shoot for convenience of location and good luck to the both of you.

Oh, I realize that. He's pretty interested in trying Korean classes out (just to make it easier to get around), but if he's not into it I'm not going to push him.

Anyone have experience with beginning levels at SNU? I think we'll probably go that right since it's starting to sound a lot easier than commuting in two directions, but it'd be good to hear some experiences...

SNU's daytime/full-time program is quite excellent at the beginning levels (1 and 2), and i can't recommend their level 1 program highly enough for providing a solid foundation for continuing to learn the korean language. at the higher levels (3+) though, SNU starts to become more like yonsei and less like sogang, which wasn't a good thing in my case. for the beginning levels, though, your husband would probably be able to get a lot out of the SNU program.

I've had some experience at SNU, it's better than Yonsei, but probably not suited to those with little time for study. Level 4 and on is very hard for even the Asian students. Atmosphere is good though and the teachers are a blast.
