| I was talking with a friend recently who just graduated law school about Korea. He brought up a interesting question. He graduated law school with a Juris Doctrate (J.D.) and I was wondering if he would qualify to teach in Korea. Its not a Bachelors, Masters etc. but requires just as much education. He never earned his BA/S and went straight to law school via the CLEP. Its a accredited law school in California. Anyone know for sure? |

| An accredited J.D. is a professional doctorate which is a higher degree than a master degree. Your friend will have no problem teaching in Korea. |

Interesting case as I believe the E-2 is predicated on the Bachelor's degree. No BA and a J.D. might confuse the crap out of a government worker!
Let us know how it pans out. I'd suggest contacting a Korean embassy or councilate and asking directly. Best to get a full name from the person supplying the information, too, if they'll give it (US embassies don't). |

If I graduated law school with a J.D and one of my options was teaching in Korea - I'd ask for my money back.
This isn't a flame - why the hell would you want to teach and in Korea after all that study and expense? |

1) why not? because you are here? no one else should come?
2) maybe you haven't heard but K law schools are planning to switch over to the American-style of teaching law - including judges being appointed, and coming from lawyers, right now they just take a test or something? - and they want instructors from the U.S. to teach
3) maybe he's gyopo ? |

My degree is in linguistics and TEFL - My specific goal when I applied to the university/degree of my choice was to teach abroad - If someone has took a law degree (at great expense) then do you not think teaching in Korea is a stupid idea? Or is America now that effed up that law graduates are coming out here?
A law degree back in the UK is still worth something.

None of it concrete - just rumour.
Then he would just get the visa applicable to him and what degree he has would not matter - thanks for playing moosehead! |

Maybe he wants to have a break for a year, go to another country, experience something he cannot experience if he would fall into a job etc ....
Many reasons can be found that do not necessitate the use of his degree. |

no, you are mistaken, it is true.
and further, when I first arrived here I met a woman from NZ who had graduated law school but then came to K for 2 years, traveled around and then went back to settle down into a law position -
I don't get why people ask why someone would want to come overseas - obviously they have their reasons - what business is it of others, anyway? |

Very interesting indeed. I had a similar situ with my degree. it was entitled an MA but was in fact an undergrad degree, so the admin people were like "thanks for you post grad degree, but where's you u/g degree?!".
If applying to the public sector, I found it useful to just phone the local edu authority and explain the situation. With that level of qualification, I can't see it being a problem getting a well paid job as long as the relevant people understand the situation. |

Well, it seems your thinking might be motivated by greed and feeling superior over one because of the degree they had. You have want to take into account maybe he wants to see the world? He has his whole life to practice law, why not take a break after nearly a decade of college? Think outside the box. |
