Hey all,
Planning a move to Korea in a few months and would appreciate some advice as to the best part of the city to live and work given that:
1: I'd like to be near a large university (to take some classes and be around people my age)
2: I'd like to be within walking distance to some entertainment/fun-loving parts of the city.
Are there unsafe parts of Seoul (I live in LA, anything to comparable to East LA?)? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

I think the Sinchon area would be a good place. I lived there my first two years in Korea and had a great time. There are a few universities in the area. If you're interested in taking classes, Yonsei is a good bet and it's in Sinchon.
As to your second question, I don't think there's an area in Seoul where you have to fear for your life. I've never felt threatened here. It's not to say that crime doesn't happen (it happens everywhere) but I feel safer here than I did in the U.S. |

Second Sinchon. Great place. And the food. Best selection of anywhere outside of Itaewon. Well, Gangnam might give it a run, but the prices are conciderably higher, plus no University, as far as I know. |

Yeah I read elsewhere that Gangnam and the area around Hongik University are cool place to be. There seem to be job openings in all three areas (the 2 I just mentioned and Sinchon). |

For your age Shinchon/Hongdae would be much better than Gangnam. Gangnam caters to a bit older group, hence why everything is more expensive there. |

Sinchon as others have mentioned already. You have 3 Universities there in Sogang, Ehwa and Yonsei. Sogang Uni the best of them if you want to learn conversational Korean, then Ehwa, then erm Yonsei (last choice, ancient drilling style teaching methods).
Saying that rent is a higher in Sinchon, though if a school pays for your place then that's not much of an issue.....thought might be a smaller place compared to other areas(?) |

Sinchon!
Hands down!
I've lived in a number of places in Seoul and Sinchon is definitely the best place.
Sinchon is the best place to live in Seoul by far.
You can't go wrong with Sinchon.
