Hey,

I've read a few posts on the topic of people quitting and getting fired from private institutes, but I was wondering if it differs with a public school system.

I'm looking to get out of my contract. My contract states that I need to provide 30 days written notice and that's about it.

Has anyone else ever tried quitting a PS job and how did it work out? Would it be easier or more difficult to obtain the letter of release? Do they just throw you out in the cold as soon as they know you're quitting or do they wait for the 30 days to pass?

Also if it helps, I'm trying to obtain another job in Korea working at an institute.

Any info you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I never advise people to break their contracts but if you do, follow what your contract says. What reaction you get depends upon the personalities of your employers and how good/bad your relationships with them are.

You will not get a letter of release.

Just curious as to why you are thinking of quitting?
Anything to do with payment?
Office Politics?
Poor location?
Too many hours?

I've never heard of anyone getting a letter of release to transfer to an institute, but they will cancel your visa so you can apply for a new one.

so if i don't get a letter of release would that mean i would have trouble obtaining a new visa? would i have to go back to my home country (Canada) to obtain it or could I get one in Japan?

If you don't work for SMOE it should be possible, but they might be very unhappy about it.

why would SMOE be so against anyone resigning? they have difficulty retaining teachers?

I ask only because of my horrible exp. with GEPIK, both in terms of coteacher and GEPIK's involvement or lack thereof in problems. I had a first coteacher who was Hell on wheels, to the point she ATTACKED me. Granted, it wa a slap, but I wanted someone to do a lot more than what ended up happening.

I wont bore with the whole story. But the vindictive response I received from GEPIK when i asked about getting a new position at another school was really too much. Better to get out of Dodge now than deal with any more of this headache. Just curious on SMOE's ability to assist and deal with problems should they occur.

SMOE's policy is not to give teachers who break a contract a letter of release. I guess the number of new teachers who want to work in Seoul more than makes up for those who might be turned off by this policy.

Public schools just reached a new low in my books if they aren't willing to release someone who is resigning according to the contract.

I can't wait to get out of this country's pathetic ESL business.

ttompatz, I believe, used to vow that this practice was illegal and nobody had taken SMOE to the labor board about it.

Yes she did.... I know really regret not involving the police, for no other reason than to see how many people can lose face...

She knocked my lense out of my glasses, but I stood up, and presented her my cheek again, and asked if she wanted to do it again... let her dig her own grave. And her friend was in the room, too.... after a two-hour meeting some agreement was worked out that wasnt very helpful in the long run, and GEPIK'S extent of helping with any angle of the problem was to make two phone calls, then pretend nothing happened.

I was going to resign after Christmas, but that was the same time the school decided to shrink by 2/3, with the most of the teachers leaving anyway. INCLUDING my Coteacher from Hell. The new ones have been fine to work with- I always tell them between someone good with English and a team player, I'll take a team player.

Somewhere Vince Lombardi is smiling.... and crying, if Brett Farve makes another ill-fated comeback, but that's another story.

On a related matter, what is a good way to make sure GEPIK authorities and my Principal lost a lot of Face before I leave? Twisted Evil

I was shoved by a student and informed the MoL; they basically said that they don't get involved in disputes if it doesn't involve pay. Shocked

tssmith62, you are not "breaking" your contract if you "follow" it...in other words, if you contract says either side must give 30 days notice, and you give it, that IS following your contract...

in my own experience, after six months I gave a 30+ days notice, to my immediate office/supervisor, plus the provincial office of education, with whom my contract is signed;

I had a sleazy/incompetent supervisor so I did not even bother asking him for a letter of release...besides the fact that he wouldn't know what it was or how to generate it...

after giving the notice, I asked the provincial office of education for the letter of release - as they were the originators of my contract - and asked for it weeks in advance of my last day...and received it,

good that I had done the logical, for as I suspected, on the last day ...the sleazy supervisor tried to pull all kinds of crap ...including not paying my salary properly...big, honest scene . these bureaucrats cannot stand.
