Hello all, I'm at work right now and my director is pressuring me to sign a form to receive a tax refund. She says it is due tomorrow morning. The form includes fields for me to enter bank name and acct number, which is info they currently do not know. Without giving any more details I will say that the timing of this paperwork is very "cunning."

Do I have anything to worry about if I give them the info?

Cheers!

They want 240,000? Do you have less than that in your bank account? Do you make less than that per month?

They can take it out of your salary if it is really needed. They don't need to go snooping into your bank account.

This is a gas tax rebate. Many people received it last November. However, some people couldn't get it as they hadn't worked long enough of the year 2007. So, this rebate is for the year 2008. It is legit. I had to enter my account name and number, and received the 240,000 rebate.

Are you paid in cash every month? There is nothing they can do to take money out of your account without pin numbers, bank books or ATM cards.

I guess the OP gets paid in cash, but apparently believes that anyone with your bank account number can clean you out. Not the case.

DO ANY OF YOU HAVE A CELL PHONE AND HAVE MONTHLY FEES TAKEN OUT?

DO THEY HAVE YOUR PIN NUMBER? (NOPE!!!)

If you sign it, they can take money out probably. There is NO need to sign anything. The school is supposed to pay directly into your account. I would be very careful about this.

For these purposes, I have a "bill" account. I never have much in it, only enough to pay the essential bills. Give them that account. If they are really just putting money into it, then you can use it to pay the bills. If they are up to something, then you won't lose much.

BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN GIVING YOUR BANK INFO OUT

lifeinkorea,

The paper he was asked to sign was from NTS, with NTS logos all over it. Yes, cell phone companies as well as Cable and Internet companies can directly withdraw money from you account, provided that a receipt is issued. I highly doubt that a bank would allow a hagwon owner to withdraw money from a foreigner's account. I say this because once I had been overpaid. The hagwon by accident paid me twice in a month. They realized their mistake minutes later, but they had to come to me and get me to withdraw the money and give it to them.

Also, I had a teacher pull a runner. (long story, no loss on our part, he was on his way out.) but he left over 1,700,000 won in apartment, cable, internet, telephone fees. There was no way that we could access his account, even though we had proper documentation, filed a police and immigration report.

Bottom line is, there are certain companies that have credibility, such as SK, LG or C & M (a cable company) these are the ones that banks will allow such transactions to occur. Your run of the mill hagwon wouldn't stand a chance, especially if, as the OP stated, they don't already have his bank account number, and are therefore paying him cash.

It's quite possible. You have to realize that the Korean system is an extreme. 1) The government is going to enforce slave labor soon by capping the exchange rate to 80% of your money (YES, the GOVERNMENT, the people that run things here, will be taking 20% of your earnings.) Even if the Korean economy is improving, the government is not going to allow it to improve past a certain point. 2) When we work within a restrictive system as this (working and with banking), then when things become normal (in relationship to our home country) we will NOT be given notice.

I have been cheated out of money and I have had experience in this. Why take the chance when you can do a simple solution. Open a secondary bank account and don't keep that much money in it. Then, if something bad does happen, you will be able to minimize the loss.

I am doing what I can do to prevent this. If you want to give out your bank info, that's none of my business.

lifeinkorea,

I respect your opinion, and certainly believe that people should take the precautions that they see fit. I don't believe banks would do such a thing. Remember, we often hear of shady academies asking teachers to open a bank account and give the company the bank book and pin numbers. This is a means for them to cheat taxes.

If people feel more comfortable opening a secondary account, by all means, go for it. But, if as the OP stated, that he was under a time constraint to get 240,000 won, I would tell him not to worry, and if he feels the necessity afterwards to open a secondary account to ensure that his academy doesn't have his info, go for it.

I guess the main difference here is that I completely trust my employers. I have worked for them for 7 years.

I have opened up 3 bank accounts. All it took was filling out an application. The first time, the hagwon owner wouldn't even go with me to help with language problems. I had a Korean to Japanese dictionary and had to communicate using three languages.

It was all done within 20 minutes. I don't see how gambling 240,000 against a monthly salary of 2,400,000 is going to help.

It's like taking a pawn in a chess game when you don't need to. That must be a very important 240,000.

If you want to obey your master without questioning, that's none of my business either.

Actually, on the bank thing, I also have 2 accounts, one for the school & to pay bills, one for my savings and personal expenses.

Yes, I have been cheated out of money, but that was from my former hagwon. They demanded I give them cash to pay the bills, then kept the cash and the companies took the money out of my account (well, what little was left in there). On payday, I would move most of the funds out of there.

I'm not sure what the government has to do with this. You think they can't find your bank account info?

This is for those that did not qualify for the rebate last time because they didn't work enough of 2007.

Taxes are due to be submitted by the end of May.

Does anyone have the link to this year's form? Here's last year's form (I think):

Page 2

I thought I was eligible last year but I wasn't so wanted to apply this time around.
