So I'm probably getting my M.A. in TESOL while here. That means 2 or 2.5 more years. I have a TEFL as well and by the end of it all I should have about 5-6 years of teaching at uni experience.
I do want to work in more countries though but I'm conflicted hardcore. So far I have not seen similar uni situations in other countries. While I earn a bit less I get at least four months vacations, work four days a week, and work under 20 hours a week. I'm also generally liked at my college.
I've become addicted to the lack of work. It will be hard ever going back to a 40 hour a week gig. I'm one of those sorts who works because he has to and would absolutely enjoy never working again. Teaching uni in Korea is about as close as I can come to that dream so far.
Here is most of my assumptions so far:
Vietnam: Not much Uni opportunity.
China: Uni available but drastically lower pay than hagwons and must suppliment with privates. Less vacation.
Middle East: 30 days vacation standard. Usually 40 hours a week of office hours. 20 hours usually teaching. More pay. Higher qualifications. More benefits.
Thailand: See China.
Japan: Hours about the same as a hagwon, higher cost of living, little vacation or wants Ph.D.
Taiwan: Ph.D. only.
Hong Kong: Pays less than NET scheme by far and high cost of living means difficult to accomplish.
Singapore: Less vacation, moderate pay but much larger housing and cost of living cost than pay accomodates.
Korea: Oodles of vacation, low hours, moderate to slightly less pay than some hagwons or other jobs but moderate cost of living.
About all I can think of. What do you guys think? Comments? Seems for uni work Korea reigns supreme in my opinion though there are some negative trends. |
