Hi there, I'm going to be getting cable and would really like to be able to get AFN because the Letterman show is on it. Is there a company which offers AFN as part of its cable package? Thanks! |

None of the cable companies carry AFN anymore. In some places it is possible to get it via a pair of rabbit ears. |

AFN is paid for by US taxpayers, but you wouldn't know it based on how it all went down. In Texas we would call it a "peeing war between two skunks." The Korean cable companies and AAFES got into an argument over cable fees (and AAFES wanted to charge people for boxes and monthly service). They couldn't come to an agreement on how to screw over all of us, so no deal was made and AFN was taken off Korean cable. |

Wylies doesn't know what he's talking about. The issue with the Korean cable companies hijacking the signal was two-fold: they were hijacking the signal and the content providers (NBC, ABC, etc.) were not thrilled that their content was being provided via cable by unauthorized outfits with no compensation to the content providers. |

in addition networks like ocn etc that bought korean rights to shows were getting lower auidences because of afn showing more recent seasons so they joined with the studios to kill afn. yeah the part about aafes getting into the dish market, adding more channels like spectrum, sports etc, and wanting the money the gis were paying for korean cable also played into the equation
heck you can get all the shows on bit torrent faster than when they air on afn anyhow |

I don't know where people get the "AFN wants money from GIs" bit. They're not a for-profit outfit.
And here is a bit of a reminder about how the Korean cable companies have been providing AFN:

CentralCali had it right. The American networks were getting mad that unauthorized viewers had access to their content.
AFN doesn't have to pay full price for their shows since they are a non-profit organization, and so, AFN faced coming up with a way to limit viewership to the intended audience (GIs). The idea was never to screwing the GIs into paying.
I'm still lamenting the day my cable company cut my AFN. Korea has never been the same since. |

I still get AFN (I live in Dongdaemun) quite well on a 20,000 won UHF antenna. Also, a cheap set of rabbit ears might work, depending on where you are located (how close you are to the AFN antenna).
In Seoul it (AFN) is located at Namsan, near the US army base at Yongsan. Channel 34 UHF.
Downloading is OK for movies or back episodes of weekly TV shows, but it doesn't compare with being able to just turn on the TV with the remote and watch your favorite current program/news show. |

There is more than one AFN-K channel. The general channel is broadcast over the public airwaves and requires only the traditional antenna to receive. The hijacked signals were for the "extra" or "premium" channels provided by AFN-K for their cable/satellite service. |
