This would have been handy in college:

Not at that price. They can keep it.

True, it's expensive. Particularly given that are acceptable cheaper alternatives available for electronic reading.

I guess it really depends on the audience. I've got around 20 programming books sitting on the shelves back home. The average price is $40.

That's around $800 of books that I'd rather not lug around Asia and can't find in bookstores here.

I don't know... some of the college textbooks I had cost around 200 dollars a piece. If they could knock about 30% off for a digital copy of a book instead. The kindle would pay for itself quite fast.

Exactly.

I bought a printer this year because I'd sometimes rather carry around a few pieces of paper than my laptop when I go to a coffee shop.

Newspapers are another format that would be suited to this size device.

Its a total waste.

1. If a university goes all kindle then a student can no longer sell back that History 101 textbook that they will never use again.
2. Publishers will not discount textbooks just because it is digital. MP3s aren't any cheaper than CDs when you consider the cost of the entire CD.
3. Publishers will make more money because each class of students will need to buy a 'new' book.
4. Textbooks are sturdy. You can spill your 99 cent draft on a textbook, wipe it off, and still be good to go. Spill a beer on your Kindle and you're out of luck.

I am pretty sure students will find a way NOT to buy full price ....

If you're drinking beer while studying then the textbook isn't going to help you. Wink

Seriously, the issue of spilling a coffee etc. on your textbook could be used against buying a laptop, mp3 player etc. Any adult knows that putting your coffee cup next to your laptop/Kindle etc. is courting danger, whereas putting your coffee cup next to your textbook is relatively safe. Adapt and take responsible choices.

I don't know how you can assert that publishers will charge the same price for the kindle version of a textbook when publishers are offering their books at a significantly(50% isn't unusual) discounted rate on Amazon.com. By cutting out distribution, retail etc. they can afford to cut their prices and still make similar profits.
