or at least their opinion or letter pages anyway. the most depressing threads on daves are responses to the trash written by Heur or the other one and printed and published by these papers. i think it would do the entire expat community the world of good to just simply NOT read them anymore.
also, KHerald, if you are reading this - don't you have any input about the trash that gets published in these sections?
So - List of those who boycott KT / KH :

Lamers is a tool, and I've written his editor on several occasions expressing how useless the Expat Living section is, but in point of fact, he is *not* listed as an editor or department head, and is therefore just a grunt, a lackey, and not responsible for what happens in KH. |

The problem with the Korea Times is not what they choose to publish. The problem is the fact that they have so little choice of what they can publish. It's pretty similar to when I was an opinion editor of a university newspaper. Some days, you were lucky if you had enough content to fill the page just because no one wanted to write anything. You'd have to cajole and convince people to write.
The Korea Times feels that way because they seem to publish most of what they get (aside from criticism of individuals or complaints about previous articles). I sent in one article and it was published a week or so later. That's when I started to realize they're probably in a crunch time mode with most of their content and will publish pretty much anything, as long as it has a bit of merit to it.
The point is there's probably not a slant to it at all. The reason they publish so much by the same people is because those same people keep sending in stuff. It seems as simple as that.
The only advantage the Korea Times has over most other local newspapers is that it's in English. It's not a very good newspaper, and if the New York Times or some larger newspaper competed internationally, it would have zero chance of survival. I read it when I first came over here, but then I started to realize that almost every article is identical to one I've read before, and any news is mainly AP or similar content picked up off a reader. The "local" information seems regurgitated and overdone because honestly, there's not a lot going on in Korea that's really all that interesting. |

The KT and the KH are rags. Really, people.
The International Herald Tribune is the best English newpaper all the way, hands down. And, if you are looking for the latest trash going on in Korea, it comes with a copy of the English JoongAng Daily insert inside.
I'm tired of reading about how bad the two aforementioned rags are. Do yourself a favour and start reading the IHT. |

Doesn't matter. In reality, their circulation is like 5,000 (about the same as two hgih school papers) for their daily, most of that being freebies on Korean Air flights. Koreans never read the Herald writes anyway (and that's the only thing that would concern me). It's just a tiny group of Koreans and contributors writing to, for, and about us--but we're the only audience. Relax. |

Well, yes, and no. The circulation may be small, but it's made up of people who are important to us. Plus, many Koreans who are learning English use these newspapers, and Korean teachers read them, too. Haven't you ever had a student or a Korean teacher show you one of these attack articles on foreign teachers? I have had it happen- twice from the Korea Herald- and it's why I make such a big deal about it.
It's totally ridiculous that it happens and should never be excused. |

I will see about reading the Herald Tribune. I am not sure about boycotting the papers. I agree with Sarbonn that if we want more favorable stuff in the Korea Times, we would have to write stuff, because they want content. They published a piece that I wrote regarding Korean politics and another one I wrote in response to Huer. I don't think boycotting them will do us any good. |

Look, foreign language papers always suck, I just want the one that sucks less. Here, you've got KH and KT, and KT sucks. That's all there is to it. KH sucks, but we still buy it because it's in English and it sucks less than KT. I've read worse papers. You could spend 1000 on soju, or the KH, I recommend the KH. |
Well, you do know I call the Korean Times the Korean Soju Times.
You might as well drink soju and write the stuff printed on that paper with the exception of some stuff written by Michael Breen and a few others.
Yes, I have heard of horrible expat newspapers in places like Mexico.
When I resided in Kuwait, though, they had a pretty decent English newspaper called the Arab Times. At least, it was decent then. Some countries have better papers than others. |

I often read the "Japan Times" - just because it is much more interesting than any Korean newspaper...

The IHT is the global edition of the New York Times.
Subscriptions can be done here: http://joongangdaily.joins.com/
The IHT's online site is www.iht.com.
Now, there is no excuse for reading the KT or the KH. |
