I am currently studying Korean using books and CDs and it is coming along ok. I would like to speed up my learning by doing a couple of classes per week near to where I live in Ansan.

I know there are classes at the Foreign Worker Centre and other places over the weekend but I am looking for weekday evening classes if possible.

Does anybody have any ideas of where I could do this in Ansan or within 30 minutes of travel. I would also consider a private tutor if they were experienced. Any recommendations would be much appreciated...

i've been taking korean classes at hanyang university in ansan. there's s metro stop for the university about 4 stops away from ansan station.

i've been going in the morning, Mon-Tues-Thurs-Fri from 9am-1pm but i think there are also evening classes. 16 hours a week, plus a few cultural classes on wednesday that are optional, 10 weeks long, 1 million won. not a bad rate per-hour.

yes it's pretty intense but it's a great way to learn quickly. most of the other students are chinese, mongolian, and japanese. the teachers and the textbooks are both very good.

here's the link...

email them for more information about the evening classes, because that information isn't on the page. however i know there are evening for sure.

I'm probably going to take the intensive Korean course at Hanyang this upcoming session.

Karma, how good is the course? I know you're there 16 hours a week, but how much has your Korean progressed so far?

i'd say the course is pretty good. i also took intensive language course in italian in italy. the biggest difference is that this course is much more driven by the material ie textbook. in italy there was alot more 'shooting the shit' and just chatting. it was more casual, but that was helpful to develop conversation skills. at hanyang the teacher follows the exercises more.

also, the instructor is very good. she can speak korean, english, japanese, and write in chinese. one problem in the class is that some of the students don't understand english well, so she has to explain some difficult grammar points multiple times in different langauges.

my korean has gone from essentially nothing aside from knowing about half the alphabet, to now i can have a simple if broken conversations about a variety of topics. i can ask for things in stores, about prices, directions, chat with girls, etc.

the biggest problem for me, though, is that i have to teach everyday from 4-10PM. the course is designed for you to review the material and do homework everyday for a few hours after spending 4 hours in class. i just don't have the time. i wish i wasn't working and i could spend more time outside of class reviewing and previewing the lessons. if i could've learned everything we've covered so far, i would be much much better. i've probably absorbed only about 40 percent of what we've done, but it has still been a great experience. after the course ends, i'll be able to go over the stuff again and keep practicing.

you might be able to find a few more people who study Korean in Ansan here

I teach at Hanyang, but as I'm an instructor I don't really have the time to take the lessons. I know the instructor though, she seems nice aside from leaving the computer on in my class room. From what I understand Hanyang's Korean program is much like many other Korean programs. They tend to move quickly and throw a lot of material at you with limited practice and explanation. Over all though it seems well run and the books are useful. I like to take a class then follow up by doing self study with a similar level book from Sogang.

You can also take classes down at Ansan Station on the weekend for free as another poster mentioned.
