I thought I'd seen everything at school until the other night on my way to class (I teach adult conversation classes).

I got in the elevator, pressed the button and as the doors closed I saw a reflection of a student hunched over, facing a corner of the elevator with his hands covering both sides of his face.

First thought, the person was upset and "usual me," I was going to offer to help. But then, at second glance, the student reminded me of my middle school student who always comes late to class.

When the elevator doors began to open, I saw his reflection as he straightened up and hurriedly ducked out in the opposite direction from where I was headed, still covering his face paprazzi style.

Yikes!

Time to break the ice, put your hand underneath your armpits and make a farting noise.

Last night my student showed up with his dad.

The manager asks me, how is the student's condition?

I'm wondering if he has a medical problem (that one's already "asked and answered").

So of course I had to tell Papa his son (rivers of sweat running down his forehead) was doing great in class (when he shows up) so he wouldn't get whacked at home by his father.

Later in class when we're talking about expressions, I ask my student, "What's an idiom?"

He replies, it means "you're stupid."

Another student explained to him, "idiom" not "idiot!"

Classic!

Why would you not try to help your student by giving honest advice to his father instead of a whitewash?

Because honest advise to the father = a severe beating for the student

This way the student is indebted to the teacher and might try harder now. But if the students continues to act up than surely next time speak the truth. Sometimes a little evil can produce a great good.

Thanks.

This is exactly what happened. My student became a model student that night. I'd already heard stories about his father hitting him "to be a better student," so I wasn't about to let that happen on my account.
