Has anyone used a Korean drivers license to rent a car when on vacation back in their home country?
How does one get an International Driving Permit in Korea to supplement your Korean license while on vacation?
I'm specifically looking for information relating to renting and driving in the U.S. but all information for the benefit of others would also be appreciated. Thanks! |

I THINK I used my Korean DL in the UK last year to rent a car, but I had an international DL just in case. Honestly, don't remember if I used the international DL or not. I DO remember that a few years ago, I "co-rented" a car in the UK with my father using only my Korean license.
As for the International DL, if memory serves, you just go to your local DMV, fill out a form, provide a few pictures, and that's that. I can't remember costs or turnaround time, but don't remember it being a problem. |

| Been there, done that.....go to the DMV....bring a few pics, pay some fees, fill out the form and you'll get the IDL. Good for one year. |

Go to the drivers license office (in your case the one in Mapo-gu, not far from the World Cup stadium), fill out the form, pay the money, give them a passport size photo, wait 15 minutes or so and take your IDP home with you. I guess you may have been to that office before if you live in Yeonshinnae. In case you have, you get the IDP from the same counter as where you get your exchanged Korean license from - the one on the far left as you go in.
Obviously, you'll need your Korean license and your ARC too. I don't think your passport is strictly needed and the woman I dealt with didn't ask for mine, but I took it just in case. All really straightforward.
There is a rule that you need to have been in Korea at least 3 years, but this doesn't apply for most of the F visa categories, and definitely not to F2s or F5s. And I think you've been here longer than 3 years anyway, haven't you, T-J? |
