I have gone through 4 computers this school year. My PC which had run fine for 2 years finally gave up the ghost. Then the next laptop the school gave me lasted about 2 months. Then the next two laptops given to me crashed relatively fast (about two weeks each). Now I am on my fifth computer that is showing signs of the blue screen of death also, but that is not the point. Point is that every time I get a new computer I have to install all the software I use for regular everyday practical work. Now the fine folks at the education office have the new cleanpass system operating, which filters out bad websites like www.adobe.com or Microsoft in the fear that something terrible is going to be downloaded on the computer at school. Needless to say I cannot even download a program like flash player which is a vitally important part of the process for the work I am doing with students. Not sure what the end result is, but I have to make a call to the education office to seek their permission to stop the filtering of regular websites. The system is set up now so that even if I wanted I can't get any updates for my software or tools commonly being used for educational purposes. Anyone else experienced this as of late? Maybe it is just catching up to me since I have not had any problems with this situation prior to this month.

Chalk it up to common sense?
You've been through 5 computers in how long?
What do you do to these poor machines?

It appears our school got in on a fire sale of some really low quality laptops and they bought up the bunch of the them, I mean like 300 of them. They tinker with them and put them into classrooms and the length of operation on a given machine is like throwing the dice. I have been through the computers they gave me quickly because they reserved the best of the computers for the Korean teachers to use, which I can understand to a point. I guess it is just the luck of the draw with any of the remaining computers they give me.

Yep, I got the oldest and most busted computer at my public school. It crashed every couple weeks, but they would just reinstall windows and give it back...

Have you thought maybe getting a memory stick or portable hard drive to save all the programs you need for work? You can also download an open source program called portable apps (http://portableapps.com/apps) which lets you run portable versions of programs such as firefox, vlc media player, open office, 7-zip etc, etc.

Maybe they're overheating and have really poor air circulation and fans....

I did invest in a 250 gig USB flash drive last year so the storage and retrieval of the programs is not hard. It works well, because when these things happen it can really be a downer if you don't have software back-ups.

You are probably right about the overheating. The laptops they give me really appear and sound to be laboring with the internal fans running 90% or more of the time. My new laptop at home seldom if ever runs the fan, except on very warm days.

Just to remind everyone, I did not intend to complain about this observation. I just wanted to mention it and see how many others are experiencing problem with their school computers. Not a major issue, just a break from the normal conversation.
