I just got my visa renewed- its good May 12, 2010. Thats the last day of my contract. If I have to work that day obviously I'm not going to be flying out on that day. How long can I stay past with out some sort of penalty?

Go to immi and they can give you a little longer with no worries... you will be limited to touristy stuff though, so no working.

I helped a friend get this sorted a few years ago (I got him there before they closed). Painless, though I do recall they wanted a letter explaining why he was staying, though he did want a little longer than normal.

Best be safe though, and ignore all advice you get here. Call Immi and ask them what the deal is Smile

You have a few options, one of which is by far the preferred one.

1) Go to the immi website and apply for an extension. If it's one of the "I'm leaving and need an extra few days to get things in order" extensions, you can do it easily online without even having to go in. It's a 30-day extension, if I remember correctly.

2) If you're an idiot like me, you can not get any extension and just leave a few days after the visa expires. You're not supposed to do it, but if you stay under 30 days, they shouldn't get pissy about it (I stayed 14 days over). At the airport, you'll have to go to the immi office and get an exit order before they let you leave the country. I know this is accurate because I did this exact thing in mid January of this year. However, Korean immi is notoriously inconsistent, so I wouldn't count on your experience being the same as mine was. Just to be safe, take 5 minutes and choose the online route.
