Just something I made up today and posted on my page for the Korean viewers to have some fun. It might be good with some of your smart classes if you want to talk about some of the slight nuances that make English fun.

Umm, maybe I shouldn't be teaching english, but I have no idea for the answers to 1,2,3 and 5. Care to enlighten?

actually after a second thought, i know #1. I think.

Could your kids actually answer these?

God, those are brutal. Even my best kids (or my coworkers for that matter) have a hard enough time with articles (ie a/an/the) let alone that test.

#1 seems a bit ambiguous though. I'm thinking a rich factory owner. What answer did you have in mind?

#5, thats a typo? "Or" should be "Oh?"

Yeah, that's right. I changed the typo just now.

They are a bit brutal, and #1 is a little bit general. Rich factory owner is right. It could also be heartless company president, cruel chairman, something like that. It could also be Mr. Burns from the Simpsons, as he said it once.

#2 is either Jesus or god, note the capital H in He. You can also bring up that if a person writes it with a lower-case h he/she may be making the point that he is not a Christian / doesn't believe in the divinity of Jesus. Some bible translations also write in a lower case h.

In #3 she would be the correct answer since the speaker seems to be a sailor who has some attachment to the ship. 'It' wouldn't necessarily be incorrect, but writing 'she' would show a bit more knowledge on sailing.

#4 - to go.

The person in #5 is rude. You might want to make it easier by reading it aloud with a sarcastic voice.

#6 - woman. I hope everybody got that.

#7 - Probably a man, but not necessarily. I don't like how women often call their friends girlfriends because it's confusing, but nevertheless some still talk like that and there's nothing I can do.

#8 - man.

#9 - man.

#10 - dub.


I suppose this isn't so much a test as a conversation piece; if you get the students to try it out, the smart ones might get a few points. I tried it on a friend of mine who had lived in Canada and she got five, not bad, and another friend of mine who is really good at English got three.

I got 8.5... for the last one instead of "dub" I wanted to say "knight", so I give myself partial credit.

Didn't have a clue about number 1.

#8 could be a woman depending on the country, but as far as I know only two so far recognize gay marriage.
