Hello everybody,

This is a question for teachers living in Sokcho (or people who've visited)....where do English teachers hang-out on a Saturday night? What are the best foreigner nightclubs/pubs?

Names of bars/clubs, or map links (wikimapia.org) would be great. Thanks.

(i know they're wont be many given the small foreigner community)

I've never been there before and i'm sure it does suck....but i have to go there for a weekend and was hoping that some insider knowledge would tell me where the English teachers hang out.

Do they go to some club/bar/pub....or have beach parties?...or just sit home and have a w--k. (he he)

You could go to Kangnung (강릉 -- I have really no idea how to spell it English) on weekends for your expat fix -- it's a reasonable bus ride away (an hour or so).

It had something of an expat community back in pre-foreign invasion days of 1996 so I'm sure that it has something going on now.

Thanks but i'm only going to Sokcho for the weekend so i wont be going on any bus rides out of town.

I guess there's only a handful of foreigners in Sokcho, most of whom probably don't read this forum so i'll just have to play it by ear. Thanks anyway.

Gangnueng has 2 foreigner bars, one is tiny, but cozy, and the other is like a larger nightclub. Just ask any English speaking looking foreigner you see walking in the downtown area where the Mcdonalds and Pizza Hut are located. The only imports were Hoegarden beer at 7,000 a pop and I think they had Guinness too, but I don't drink it.

Probably, Sokcho like most of Gangwon has no nightlife we're interested in as it's geared towards Korean groups drinking the worlds worst brew. The nightlife is limited to apartment parties where you can go to the Emart for beer and enjoy it in a room or apartment. If going with another person or a group, make your own private party. If going alone, just enjoy a few cold ones of your own in a room or PC bang with your headphones on.

Ah, the isolation method. OK for drinking, bad for meeting foreigners!

OP, like you said, it may be best to play it by ear since there's not many foreigner hotspots there. However, since there are some good sites to see there, I'm guessing others will be in the area for the weekend.

You should be able to find a few that don't have a lot going on in the evening that wouldn't mind hanging out. I usually see other foreigners at the bus stations so you may not even have to wait long.

It looks like a nice place to get away and unwind so I'm sure you will enjoy it regardless.

ok I will bite as I lived in Sokcho for two years.
there is/was a bar called the western downtown that is/was popular with the waygook crowd
Sokcho food town will have some lively nightlife on occassion. Rodeo is the place to go for big pitchers of beer and soju cocktails.
but the best place is
Dae po hang
This is the fishing port were you can have all kinds of cheap shellfish, or more expensive raw fish sitting out under the stars watching the crowds and getting trashed.

Sokcho has places where foreigners go, but none I would call a foreigner "hang out"... Chances of actually seeing foreigners in any joint in Sokcho is pretty hit and miss. "Beer Bank" is popular as well as "Miller Time," "Rodeo," and "Taksabal".. However, as I said, they are not specifically foreigner joints and there's a better chance you'll see no foreigners in those places than seeing some. This time of year many go out to the beach on the weekends.. Perhaps you can meet some folks there and join their beach parties complete with fires and beer, of course. There are quite a few more FTs in that area than even a couple years ago.
