OK, so my story is the story of the decent hardworking teacher that was mistreated from week one: discriminated against (told the owner was considering firing me because of my age), received a termination notice for reasons Labor has already stated in writing are unjustified (did not attend an institute lunch and hiking trip on my day off when I had the flu), won a labor petition while still working for unpaid wages, gone home at night to discover a note stating my utilities would be turned off because the institute had not paid my bills after I had given the institute the utility money in cash, called a bad foreigner several times in front of a government official, and so on.

Not much different from many other teachers posting here.

My institute gave me a 30 day termination notice that has me finishing work on 20 May. Now they're asking me to finish the month.

What would you like to say to the manager?

Work out the salary for them!

(Salary) / (Total working days in the month of May) = (Daily pay)

(Daily Pay) *

The good thing about this is it gives you a nice basis to negotiate Very Happy

Consider any extra days as overtime as they technically are. They would also be the basis of a new contract for the extra days.

Try this:

(Daily Pay) * 1.5 = (Daily overtime rate)

Make sure you get paid in full at the beginning of every day. Tell them that you feel they can not be trusted to pay at the end.

As I said in the other thread---finish the month, do them a favor,. Prove you are this decent hardworking teacher. If you don't, you are as bad as your Korean employer.

You have kind of put yourself into this mess now by your postings.

{Oh and thanks for proving me right about how all teachers here paint themselves as perfect and the Korean employer as evil}

Hells no!!! Why do them a favor? Will they appreciate it one iota? Would they do him any favors whatsoever?
He can prove he is a "decent hardworking teacher" who "isnt as bad as his Korean employer" by working professionally and to the best of his abilities until May 20th. Nothing more, nothing less.

And you wonder why NEts have problems in Korea. We will agree to disagree I guess. You are the better person for doing the favor than rejecting it, no matter the outcome.

No. The reason is far more simple than that. What goes around comes around. That's why.

Goodwill is a concept. I would have learned that in business school, but I went into education instead. But, in my first days, when I wore a younger man's clothes, I did several training presentations for a different division of the company I was working for. Pretty soon, I just asked them, "Hey, we can do all this for you, we're a full-service company, why don't you talk to the sales guys and some engineers?" A few guys flew in and did a short talk. Some of my friends have wives, kids, and mortgages because of the goodwill that I put forth in my first contract there, that was continued and compounded with each and every one of us that walked in the door.

Goodwill is why you come in an hour early to prepare your lessons. Goodwill is why you get every last bit of educational time out of your classes so the parents get every shipwon they paid for. Goodwill is why you get your name out there, why middle school students from the cram school down the road know your name, why enrollment goes up even though the kids think you're a huge jackass for not playing hangman.

Goodwill turns into money. That's why you do it.

What goes around comes around...and the hagwon owner in this case should experience that.

Have you ever in your entire life come across a time when you just need to step up and be the bigger person? Just for you, just for life's sake?

What would make this one of those times?

I was in a similar situation once. I agreed to work the extra time, even though they were screwing me over. I figured if I was nice and did it then things would go smoother at the end. I was wrong, they then screwed me out of 1/3 of my final pay, severance, and my ticket home.

In my experience, being the bigger person with many hagwon owners backfires. They take it to mean that you will always do what they want when they want. And they still screw you over.

If he WANTS to do it fine. If he doesn't want to then he shouldn't. They made their bed, let them sleep in it.

Because it doesn't cost him anything or open him up to any risk.
