(Sorry MODs, I know this should be in the Jobs Discussion but it's pretty important.)

The Korean Immigration Office has just told my future employer that, because I am a dual New Zealand and British citizen they require not one but two apostilled CRCs. The reason I'm going back to Korea on my NZ passport is not because I've got any UK criminal history, but simply because I'm in NZ now and imagine that arranging a UK CRC from NZ will be a really time-consuming, annoying and expensive process (not to mention I've got very little money in my UK bank account, due to the useless UK tax department failing to deposit my tax return).

Can anyone please tell me how I can arrange a British CRC check from NZ? I've checked out the British High Commision's website but they only have a link to an UK office offering police background checks for UK citizens immigrating to NZ, OZ and the US.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

(a curse on the Korean Immigration Office)

That's kind of unfortunate. People with dual citizenship shouldn't reveal that they have dual citizenship and thus only deal with one background check. I am a citizen of the U.S. and Canada, and I only submitted one background check. I came in the first place only with my American passport.

I know. In the past however I had no concerns about switching between passports depending on my circumstances as that was well before the crc b.s. started. Now it looks like arranging a British CRC from NZ is going to take weeks at least, and I'm thinking of just cancelling my return. Bugger.

If you've been living in the UK and have an address there you can get it sent to and forwarded on to NZ, you might be able to get a Basic disclosure (which is acceptable) via Disclosure Scotland

http://www.disclosurescotland.co.uk/

If you fill in the online application, they usually get the disclosure sent out to you in about a week (to your UK address).

It says you have to have been living at that address for the past 12 months, but I've done it twice now from Korea using official mail addressed to me and sent to my UK address as 'proof' of residence.

Best of luck!

And yet my friend who has been living in Korea for the last 10 years still hsa to submit a CRC from his home country, but not one from Korea.

Try to bring your CRC to another immigration officer. Rule of law: They make it up as they go along and something that doesn't pass inspection one day will be passed the next.

Thanks. It looks like that might be the best option. The biggest challange will be scraping up the paperwork to prove I was there. For my last year in Oxfordshire I lived in a van in the countryside (no, I was not a pikey Smile ) so don't have much of the conventional paperwork.

And from recent experience, UK bureaucracy is shite to deal with compared to the lovely, practical, helpful Kiwi bureaucrats.

I guess that's because any crime someone was convicted of in Korea would have had them thrown out of the country anyway, or at least it would should up on K Immi's records.

My prospective manager, who seems to be a decent and pragmatic guy, made numerous phonecalls to different people at the K Immi office yesterday, and the answer from them all was

"컴퓨터는 '아니요'이라고 합니다"

kiwiduncan, why are returning to Korea? I thought you were ready to settle down in NZ.

Yeah, in the long-term I still hope to have my little eco-shack somewhere in NZ, but for that I need more money. Besides, I miss a lot of things about Korea and want to improve my Korean, get more involved in Korean green issues and so on.

I've got dual citizenship (Kiwi and UK). I've had four E2's on a Kiwi passport - and only supplied NZ docs. Sounds like you need to change your immigration office (as they are full of it).

But do they have a record of you having British citizenship, or have you ever used your British passport in Korea?

(and if they can record that kind of stuff, why can't they [Mod Edit] keep records of having seen our degrees and transcripts as well? - probably too busy posting up photos of delicious looking cakes that they once saw in a coffee shop on their cyworld mini hompi)

I knew a South African girl who had similar problems, so she stopped using her UK passport since she hadn't lived in the UK for much time.
She basically just used her South African passport after that and did a background check there. However, it seems like they've changed the rules?

I've never used my UK passport in K. However, I've always listed dual citizenship on job applications.

Anyway, thanks for the heads up. From now on, I'm just a Southern Man.
