|
|
Alright here's my situation:
I just bought a D-link DIR-300 wireless router so I can have wireless signals for some of my wireless items (ipod, ds, psp, ect.) but I have some problems.
1) In the place I live in, the apt. complex gives free internet and cable, so the internet comes from one port in the wall, so I think that the internet is hooked up to a network within the building, because the whole apt complex uses the same internet.
2) I tried to hook up the router to the one ethernet cable to see if I can get a dynamic i.p. but it didn't work (i'm guessing it's a static I.P)
Even though I'm not a pro at networking, I do have some of the basics down, and tried several ways to make a wireless network. I looked at the configurations, and tried to set up my router as an extension of the network but i'm doing something wrong. (BTW, I did see a link in this forum to make the firmware into English so I'm gonna try that tonight) I've just been looking at pictures to do the work around the korean language.
Can anyone help me, and if you need any more info, please reply and I will try to put more info in this thread about it. |

Yes, you're most likely on a Static IP, and need to learn what that address is. |

When you plug the ethernet cable from your wall socket into your computer can you get the internet? If the answer is yes then you shouldn't need do anything to your routers ip settings. If no, you will need to find out the proper ip information from your buildings manager.
Have you tried typing in htt://192.168.0.1 into your web browser to check your routers ip settings i.e. static or dynamic? |

Yeah, I can plug in the ethernet cable from the wall to my laptop, and have internet connection just fine. But when I put the ethernet cable into the router I bought, it doesn't work.
I did put the 192.168.0.1 and i think i'm on iptime something something and then the main page looks like this:
Hopefully someone can read Korean for me...and translate... I think it's a static I.P so.... |

This as far as I can tell says that your router has been assigned a dynamic IP.
This should be information about your routers firmware. When you typed in 192.168.0.1 did you have your computer plugged into your router? I ask because you should have been directed to your routers setup screen.

Nah, this is the network router I was talking about that's for the whole building. What i'm trying to do is set up my own router to connect with the existing router that's networked with the building. i can hook up with the my own router, but I can't get the internet connection to work when i hook up the building's network into my wireless router. |

Yes I figured as much, but I'm trying explain that you need to type htt://192.168.0.1 into your browser with you laptop connected to the wireless router in order to check it's settings. From what I make out your buildings router is set up for dynamic i.p and that your problem lies with your own router and thus you will need to check your router has been correctly set up. |

I've done that with the router that I have. I've reset the settings to the router to default, and I've connected the ethernet cable to the WAN port first, and I've put my computer in slot #1. I can connect to my router, but I can't connect to the internet through the router.
I've did another thing with the building ethernet connection and didn't connect it to the WAN port, but to one of the other ports and tried to set it up as an extension of the building router (basically having my computer in port 1, and the internet cable in port 2), but it still doesn't work. I've mess with the settings on that one, and for some reason, it doesn't connect correctly (giving me limited area connection warning) and so I've just reset my wireless router to default again.
I kinda figured that I need to correctly configure my wireless router to hook up with the building's network, but there lies the problem. I've followed some of the faqs online on how to set it up, but i can't seem to get it to work.
BTW, thanks for your help blade. It seems that you're the only one that can help me =) |

Apologies if I'm stating the obvious, but are you powering down the router to reset it between connection attempts? |

Hahaha, that's funny =P. But seriously, I actually reset the router by holding the reset button for at least 30 seconds that's on the back of the router (using a paper clip) and then making sure by checking the settings and making up a password and resetting it again to make sure it did reset.
I don't think you need to turn the power off on this version though if I remember reading the manual correctly. I'll try it anyways, but yeah, I make sure that the router is on default before I try anything.

Ah yeah, this link doesn't really help much, but thanks for the help. If I had a modem, this would be an easy job, but since I'm trying to connect to an existing network (like trying to set up your own wireless router through a business or school network that's already in place), it's a pain in the ass. |

You are putting in the gateway IP and the building router IP into your router configs I'm assuming? Sometimes there will be other settings that may conflict with your routers default settings. Contact the building network manager or whoever controls it to get all the settings.
Also if it was me...I'd just get my own internet drop. I don't know how big of a pipe is being dropped to the building but sharing bandwidth IMO is never cool. Especially if you download or game alot.
*edit* i reread what you wrote and fixed my response. |

If you can plug in your laptop and it pulls an address all you should need to do is plug your router into the WAN port and tell it to pull an address. There is no reason it shouldn't pull an address if your laptop does. Is your laptop actually pulling an address or is it set statically for some reason? |

AD35, try disabling your routers firewall settings to see if it's blocking access to the internet. This is what I recall doing to get a router to connect to the internet my parents had at their house a couple of years ago. |
