Sorry this is very urgent

-broke contract today by not going in

-employer had repeatedly broken contract and forced me to live in animal feces ridden apartment

-I requested my original diploma back and was denied. I told my direct boss that I would not work again until I had it.

-Today my hogwan owner harrassed my girlfriend at her work and demanded to know where she lived. When I came out of her room he was waiting for me inside her building. There was a minor scuffle as he tried to get inside. Police came and left.

-He demanded three million won for breaking contract. And threatened to have me deported if I didn't continue working for him, while he would withhold a full months pay.

-I'm still on E2

-How much of his threat of deportation and blacklisting do I need to worry about?

Many many thanks for any quick responses.

1) he can't demand three million for quitting
2) the worst he can do is report you to immigration, who will give you an exit order and you will then need to leave Korea within 14 days
3) withholding your pay as a penalty is illegal... however, you quit, so I would be surprised if the labor board helped you there

This is not a normal situation. We have a girlfriend and boyfriend apparently working at the same hagwon or the owner knows the girlfriend's hagwon owner enough to feel justified waltzing in there (imagine the balls it takes to do this). Not only is the boss risking losing 1 teacher, but the girlfriend could get up and leave also.

So, the boss has got to really not care about his teachers if he is willing to take these chances. If the girlfriend is about to finish her contract, I would play it cool so she can get her flight home and severance (as well as last pay, if possible).

If not, it looks like the hagwon owner will take it out on her when the boyfriend leaves. Something like this happened last year at a hagwon I was at. Boyfriend left, and the girlfriend soon got evicted from her apartment because she didn't want to renew her contract.

She tried to be real nice about it and even taught overtime, only to find out they weren't going to pay her for it cause of some dumb rules they were going by.

Wow, smart girl telling your boss where she lives.

Your boss is full of it. Move on, get your documents in order now. What month are you at? Get immigration to cancel your visa so you can find new work.

Get a new gf - can't believe she would turn on you like that

and get ready to be deported (nicely, with an exit order - you'll get 30 days)

you MAY have to wait until the end of your contract date to get a new job (maybe not - this part is "iffy" with IMMI)

Thanks for the replies. I am going to the labor board with this.

To clarify, girlfriend refused to give him any information (I'm still amazed at how insane you have to be to go an harass someone you have only seen twice and who DOES NOT WORK FOR YOU)

He has a lot of friends in the area that told him where we stay.
