i'm thinking of having my dad send me my xbox 360 from new jersey, what's the best way to do it? one of my friends said that i should use fedex bcuz i won't have to worry about customs, but i looked up costs on their site and they were crazy expensive, wehreas with USPS i could get it over here for like $55 (still a lot but it must be done). my question is how would you guys go about shipping something worth $200 and that weighs about 3.5kg. |

Have it sent as a Birthday Present. Make sure that if they open it your father has included a birthday card. |

Because if they think you just bought it in the US and the cost is over 150.00 they will charge custom taxes. I ship here all the time but do what you want |

Better yet, have him repackage it (but keep the original styro for protection) into another simliar sized box, label is USED, and value it at 30 bucks. If you do hit the import duty limit, they will also tax the shipping cost, which of course is ridiculous, but this is Korea. |

i didn't mean to offend you or anything, i just didn't see the significance hence why i made the thread.
that said, it's already been opened since i've had it for about 18 months already but should i still have him repackage it as used rather than just pack it in a box with a bunch of t-shirts and newspaper?
my only problem with valuing it at 30 bucks would be if it does somehow get broken, i'd be taking like a $150 loss...if the customs limit is $150 i'd be fine with that value though.
my original question had more to do with carriers though, USPS vs UPS/fedex/dhl |

I would listend to whoever told you to use fedex. I am currently waiting for a package from DHL, its an adapter for my 360. Customs has had the package for 11 days now.
I have been in contact with DHL for a week now as to why it is hung up in customs and they have been horrible in regards to finding out why. Just today they told me I should call customs and have my passport and visa number ready. (this is ridiculous, why should they need all this information)
if you can avoid customs than do it..... |

Fedex won't protect you, had a used laptop sent to me a few months ago fedex and they still held it in customs until I paid fees.
Just have the listed price under 400, then the fees aren't too bad.
Some bogus info in this thread. |

Customs does have a $150 cap, but does that include shipping or just the value of the item? |

how much are the custom fees anyway, i'm prob gonna just have my dad list it at $150 and send it thru USPS. so how does customs get in contact with you?
i checked out UPS and DHL, and there's no way i'm over $150 to get it shipped here or asking my dad to sine i have to drop another $50 or so on cables to even use it here, better of just buying a new one. |

I sent my computer to myself and had my friend write "used" on it. She was thinking as a US citizen and immediately decided to insure it for $150. THAT caused a nightmare of a problem for me, in which I didn't see my computer for 3 weeks because of the pleasure that is called Customs in Korea. I had to keep faxing copies of copies to them to prove I was who I was, that my computer was used, that it was really mine, that it was less than 6 months that I arrived here, that $150 wasn't really a concern.....
The next big item I had sent, I had her write no value and "used" on it. It came through just fine. |

I think it'd just be better to buy one here. Teachers always seem to be buying/selling them and you can get a modded one. |
