supposedly because of a request by the korean tax authority.
gepik wants all teachers working for it to provide it - ergo the korean tax authority with something called "proof of residency", REGARDLESS of whether you are exempt from being taxed in Korea or not.
e.g. American are supposed to get this from the IRS.
yeah.. sure..
HOW?
furthermore - re the IRS I subscribe to the dictum, no news is good news, and the less the IRS knows about me, and the less my name is brought up under ANY circumstance, the better.
what an effing pain ...
I'm sure you other GEPIK teachers were shown the letter today by your coordinators.. (or will be shortly)
so... what to do? and how does one obtain this completely useless piece of garbage? I like to think of myself as having GLOBAL residency now. |

Sorry I can't help. That sucks though. I don't work for Gepik, but I would simply say that you are a resident of Korea.
As a Canadian I filed for non-residency status. Maybe if you can find some documentation that states you need to live in the US for a certain amount of time throughout the year to be considered a resident.
Good luck to you guys. |

I had to do it, and have yet to get the official document. Yet I leave on the 18th.
Basically, you fill out a form (8807 I think?) and send them a MONEY ORDER no personal check where they then send you an additional form, haven't received it so I can't tell you its number. Then you are suppose to be good.
Hope this helps but my guess is that you are as lost as I am about the IRS form. |

There is a thread in the Job Disc. Forum (actually 2) which deals with this topic. |

Got this as well. It seems GEPIK is behind the ball on this, as I've got 2+ years in without taxes and am leaving in 11 weeks.
Anyways, there are two threads on this: Proof of Residency, and 8802 Form Questions.
The basic format for Americans is to file form 8802 to request form 6166. Form 6166 is what you need to provide your CT for the Korean Tax Service. It's not so complicated, but it's a def. pain. I can't do it yet because I haven't filed my taxes in awhile. If you haven't filed taxes then you must do that first.
There are two relevant forms: I8802, and F8802. I8802 is the 12 page instruction manual for f8802 (form 8802).
Good luck Bogey. I don't think I've got the time or resources to do this before I jet. The IRS says around 45 days, and possible delays beyond that. |

I dont know about the specifics but I called the US Embassy and they hooked me up with another office I didn't catch the name of. I explained what I needed and they said I can just walk into the embassy with $30 and my passport and they could get me my 'Proof of Residency' while I waited. The best part is I convinced my school I needed a day off of work to go get it! |

I posted on the other threads about this beaurocratic redundancy. You have to play the game, red tape is it's name and Moooola is it's shame.
Has a very familiar ring to it, yes. I was aware of this prior to departing for the Hermit Kingdom. I sent my 8807 in over 3 months ago and the process is still "on going". Fill it out, pay the cash and wait.................
I am a quite suspicious now that I am reading all NET's have to submit this type of documentation. I was told it was only for those NET's who were tax exempt for a specified amount of time. There's no more privacy in this world. Your whole life is out electronically, go and find it! |

Man, I'm shaking as I type, I'm so nervous. I've been here 7 years and haven't filed taxes. I called the IRS guy a couple of months ago and talked to him about getting tax information from 2002 and he said I wasn't even in the system anymore. |

I'm sorry brother but your post has me cracking up right now! I must be over tired or something! I realize it's not funny to you right now, but what the hell happened to you! SEVEN YEARS. Living the good life. You realize they are going to crucify you somehow. This is a definite classic! I'm still crying............ |

Nah, they won't crucify me. I've consulted the H&R Block guy and he said as long as I file and pay the late fees and keep up with it after that it will be okay. When I talked to the IRS agent, he said there weren't any red flags up on my name. I'm just shaking about the proof of residency certificate. Anyway, I just called him and he's checking into it. And yes, I'm stilll shaking. |

You can get the certificate for whatever year you filed income taxes. Nothing has been said by the tax office of it being for 2008. Just look at #7 on the 8808 form. The IRS might start wondering though when they get thousands of requests within a few months for those certificates. Sparkling Korea! |
