I'm pretty excited about it. Alan Moore will hate it though. |

Except for a brief flashback(?) at the beginning, he's all CGI in the flick. (Hmm... I looked at his IMDB profile... don't recognise him) |

Yeah, he is a bit obscure I guess. He mostly does moody, depressing little dramas and tragedies and stuff. Especially good (if I remember correctly) was 'waking the dead,' with Jennifer Connolly, from some time in the mid-nineties. Also he played the rockstar guy in that Cameron Crowe movie 'almost famous.' Don't hold that against him though, he's actually quite good. |

Yeah, but Alan Moore hates everything.
I think it'll be a good movie, like Lord of the Rings was a good movie...not the same as the book, not as good as the book, but pretty cool.
I wonder how long the movie will be? Long, I hope.
Hey, any of you moore fans read 'from hell?' It rules...many people don't like Eddie Campbell's illustrations, but it's as good in its way as the Watchmen. Definitely worth a download.
But considering what they did to it when they made it into a movie...that one, and the 'league of extraordinary gentlemen,' too...it's easy to understand why moore is so dead set on removing his name from any and all future adaptations of his work.
If I remember the interview I read correctly, he basically doesn't believe that his comics can be made into good movies, though, because of the very nature of comics: they are something that should be held in your hand, something you can read over a period of days or weeks, and a medium where you can look back at the first couple of pages and pick stuff out that you didn't understand at first, before you've actually finished the story, and have that enrich your appreciation of it. Movies on the other hand are to be watched in one sitting and cannot give as much depth of information and retain their watchability.
I disagree, but I think he does have something of a point. Comics are like storyboards and all, and therefore 'cinematic' in a sense, but the very way they are taken in is fundamentally different from movies. There must be some sacrifices made in translating them to a movie format. Unless they're simple, or childish; the Batman and Spiderman type of flick, or 'sin city' or '300,' translates just fine, because they're not particularly complex.
He should write movies and then make comics adapted from them, I think. |

True that.
I thought V for Vendetta was done very well considering the volume of material they had to condense into a movie. Hopefully we'll see as competent a job done with Watchmen.
The cast has me hopeful. A bunch of big names would definitely wreck the grit. |

I think this is the way to go with superhero movies. People are going to go see them anyway, and you don't need the big names to overshadow the characters, and besides, with unknowns or lesser-knowns you won't get "Ugh! There's no WAY _____ can play ______!!" |

Except for Robert Downey Jr. as Ironman. That was gold. One of Jeff Bridges more disappointing roles though. |

good point about going with lesser-known actors...really, the money could be better spent on effects than on big names.
Downey Jr. was a happy exception to that general rule. Christian Bale, too, actually. But those movies had so much cash to spend, it wasn't really as much of a factor as with 'little' pictures like 300 and Watchmen. |

Billy Crudup is pretty well known, a heck of a lot moreso than jackie what'shisname........
You may know him from MI:III, BIG FISH and ALMOST FAMOUS. But most of all he's the voice of the mastercard commercials...
"fame and anonymity?... Priceless!" |

I'm not saying name actors can't play the roles. Certainly Downey as Iron Man and Bale as Batman did superb jobs as heroes. Ledger and ... well, can't think of anyone who pulled off a GOOD non-campy villain. But I would argue they are the exception, not the rule. Oh, wait, Dafoe did a decent enough Green Goblin, I suppose.
There are plenty of examples of terrible castings just to get the name recognition in the movie. I'll never forgive Affleck for destroying Daredevil for me (or Colin Farrell for making a mockery of Bullseye, for that matter). Stick to Kevin Smith films, asshat. And Venom? Let's not go there.
I'm saying unknowns can do just a good a job as the name guys, and I'd argue better because there are no preconceived expectations going into the movie other than the character they would be playing. There's no fame to get in the way of who they're supposed to be playing. Look at all those Batman villains they butchered. Horrible. And many if not most of the X-Men (with a few exceptions, arguably).
Stick with unknowns or lesser-knowns (like Eric Bana or Thomas Jane). Hell, Hugh Jackman was a relative unknown with American audiences when he first took on Wolverine. Did a pretty good job. |
