In previous posts I mentioned how my hagwon terminated me for personal reasons and Labor has already said in writing, unjustified.

Last week I won a petition against the hagwon for unpaid wages (I have about 10 days left to work).

My 30 day termination notice has me finishing in the middle of the May. The institute manager asked me if I would finish the month because it would look bad for the institute and the students?!

The institute said it would give me a letter of release if I stay through the end of month.

LOR vs. EXIT ORDER: Immigration told me that when I go to their office with the institute to cancel my visa, I can get an Exit Order to stay in Korea for another month which is enough time to submit paperwork for another job before making a visa run...so as I see it, I don't need an LOR to apply for another position.

Question: So the question is, should I stay until the end of the month to get the LOR? Do I need it?

Why can't you stay until the end of the month and get an Exit Order?

Whatever you do, be very prepared for the hagwon to try to screw you over somehow on your way out.

My termination notice signed by the owner has me leaving on 20 May.

On that day I can go to Immigration and get an Exit Order.

I just spoke to Labor and Immigration.

The hagwon is the only one in this story who benefits from me staying until the end of the month. A Letter of Release does nothing for me because I worked less than 90 days and I'm not transferring to a public school. I still have to make a visa run.

you have your termination date that they gave you - just go.

why do any favors for them when they are the ones that canned you and were kind enough to let you take them to the labor over unpaid wages?

they are only backpedaling now because the recruiter that is providing your replacement can't supply a body until the end of may - it has nothing to do with 'a change of heart'

when your termination date arrives, pack your stuff, walk out and dont look back........until you have to take them back to the labor board for that last screwing they are going to give you on your final pay.

Then that's the day you should leave. And don't be like Lot's wife. Don't look back.

And the boss knows this all too well. He doesn't give a flying hoot about you. That's already been made quite clear.

But here's something else to consider. The manager told me that she can keep it secret from the owner (who signed my 30 day termination notice in mid-April) that I'm working through the end of the month, so in that case, how do I know if the hagwon is going to pay me for that time?

"Oh, you came here and did work after I told you to leave? I'm not going to pay you! You were trespassing!" That's if you're lucky. If you're unlucky, it'll be, "You came here and caused harm to my business!"

Quote:
Last night, I came home to find a note on my door that said my water and electricity would be shut off in 7 days. My hagwon hadn't been paying my bills for the past two months after I had been giving them payment in cash!

If you gave them money but didn't have it deducted from your salary, then you'll have to go to court to get that money back. If it was deducted straight from your salary, then that's a Labor Board issue: Unlawfully Withheld Pay.

But, who cares if the place has water in it or heat or whatever? Isn't it a place provided by your scummy boss and the unpaid bills are in his name?

Seriously, you cannot trust your boss at all. You're still operating in your mind like you're dealing with someone back home who's afraid of breaking the law regarding employment. Hagweon owners here laugh at the law.

1- Then screw them. Leave on the 20th. You are doing what the owner has told you to do, after all, right?

2- You don't. And after the manner in which they treated you and lied to you and manipulated your termination to avoid (failingly so) the illegal termination, how could you trust them to pay you for it?

3- So now they are pocketing the money you paid for utilities and causing your utilities to be turned off for non-payment. This is further reason to say goodbye on the 20th. And you are considering working for these jokers longer and hoping they will pay you? Are you on crack?

Dude, YOU MUST LEAVE ASAP!

By staying and doing this favour, you are letting these clowns off the hook. Their bad behaviour needs punishing. I'd look the manager straight in the eye and tell him, "You treat me like garbage and then expect me to do you a favour? Not a chance."

You are seiously weak if you cave and stay.

You won your court battle. Now leave as soon as your contract is up. Get another job and don't look back.

Sorry, but any further updates on the situation from the OP other than "It is May 20th, and I have finally left my school", and we can put him in the bin where we keep the complete fools.

Hey everybody.

Somebody's missing my reply to Oculis Orbit. I agreed with him 100%... finish my last day (20 May), move on and don't look back...except if they short my salary and need to file a petition with the same office that already agreed with me and had my hagwon pay me back wages last week.

By the way, the hagwon agreed to pay the extra utility bill today so I'll know when I go to take a shower in 6 days (they probably thought it wouldn't catch up to them until after I left).

Oculis Orbis nailed it when he wrote....

The institute manager confirmed that by email.

What would your reply be to the manager?

Dear manager,

Thirty days is the law, and I will not stay one day longer than I must.

Your boss brings shame to Korea.

Disgusted,

I would stay and finish the month, if for nothing else than to teach my students. 'Do good to those who do evil'

YF's obviously referring to the last poster above when he mentioned the bin. The OP's going to get shafted as in no pay whatsoever. "Difficult to calculate." Like heck! That's obviously a ploy.
