Not happy to supposedly "rebrand" themselves, now Republicans want to actually make it their official policy to rebrand the Democrats.

Seems to me a more formal bit of absurdity.

Yes, it can. And worse, is. The plan has been floating around for a couple of weeks and in spite of the hoots and cat calls, they are still going ahead with it. I imagine the follow-up will be a mass 'stick out your tongue' demonstration.
The good news is that when the officials of your party meet to call their opponents names, you have sunk so low that the bottom cannot possibly too much farther away. The bad news is that the writers of SNL/Jon Stewart/Stephen Colbert will have to go back to work being creative and stop relying on the Republicans to write their material for them--and they cannot possibly be as funny. |

It does make the eyes roll, but don't think it has no chance of having an effect. Agree with them or not you have to give the republicans 1 thing. They are disciplined. They come up with a party line and they stick to it. Through mocking, questioning, attempts to ignore, or attempts to change it. Often, they win through against all odds. Does anyone call it anything but a surge anymore? Reporters now ask if there will be a surge in Afghanistan. The word escalation has disappeared. The big lie. Say something enough and it becomes the accepted truth. The republicans understand this.
I think Obama is showing signs of being the first democrat with an answer to their tactics, so they may not win through. However, I have become disillusioned by the absolute horse hockey democrats, reporters and the American public has let them get away with in the past. |

Two comments:
1. It seems to me that the Democratic Party would be within their rights to sue the Republican Party if the latter really attempted to misrepresent the former in the use of its proper, legal name. The grounds would be misrepresentation, fraud, defamation, or slander. Not of individuals (in terms of the legal aspect) but of organizations.
2. The Democratic Party might also be within their rights obtain a certiorari (a court order to quash the Republican resolution or a mandamus requiring the Republican Party to use the DP's official name whenever they make reference to it. |

I think that would be a major mistake. Taking them to court would give them some kind of legal legitimacy. As it is, they are just a hilarious, misbegotten parody of a political party which has a difficult time being taken seriously on any issue. Leave them to the comedians on Comedy Central to pillory. It's the best revenge. |
